The Beginning of the End?

In the last couple on months this place as really changed. There seems to be lots of people complaining about anything and everything. People fighting, people leaving, long time creators have given up creating and disappearing. I'm seeing less and less people coming to these forums. One late night I found that there was like only 15 active members here...that was unheard of at one time. Even at peak times there seems to be far less people here then there use to be. What happened? Where did all the creators go? Is this the beginning of the end for Trainz?

Only 635 days to run Trainz: http://www.sun-sentinel.com/broadba...-edge-mayan-doomsday-calendar,0,6972460.flash

Well now, I guess that answers the question. A real conversation must be a thing of the past.

it seems like its mainly new members not knowing how to behave and not learning from there mistakes.... or waiting for someone to sit right by them teaching step by step doing everything for them. unfortunatly thats how most kids at my school are :( and then theres all the wanting and asking, which most creators dont like and most leave or go payware. or the trolling that apparently was going on yesterday in the USA pics :o? people these days are being more ignorant and demanding which is causing problems in everything. things will hopefully improve here and we can convince old productive members (unlike me) to come back.

Well, if they do not know any thing about what they want you to help them with, then it is a lot kinder and better to just help them. ;)

Well now, I guess that answers the question. A real conversation must be a thing of the past.

Well the problem is no one wants to have real conversations:hehe:

If you like Trainz and support Auran/N3V your called "an Auran/N3V fan boy" or worse by those who wish to own Trainz 2004 or in some cases UTC and feed from the teat of Auran/N3V forever for free…

That's the way I see it anyway. It's really been the reason that I'll show up a few months here and a few months there before I get tired of it all and stop until the next version comes out:D

I think the community is pretty much split into two camps, those who want Auran/N3V to succeed and continue to create new and exciting versions, and those who bought it once, maybe twice, are mad that the system requirements keep going higher and are mad that Auran/N3V decided to cut off free access from 2006 backwards.

You can't believe how many times I've been called rich because I bought a $999 Dell two years ago and put a few dollars in it upgrading some of its components over the last two years. They call me Uber rich when they see that I have a first-class ticket and have spent $30 for TransDem.

I really get shocked and surprised sometimes because on my fixed income I budget a few dollars here and there for my hobby (Trainz) and just get disparaged for it by quite a few in the community. I just can't get my head around people refusing to move forward to the point of disparaging not only Auran/N3V but some of its loyal customers simply because technology is moving forward.

But of course a lot of the people that have called me some pretty derogatory names telling me that they can't afford a new PC, to upgrade their old PC, a single piece of payware, or even God for bid a first-class ticket, are the same ones that in other threads here and on other forums brag about their brand-new HO scale locomotive for their train set that costs $250.

I guess it all comes down to a matter of priorities. I know where my priorities lay, and I'll never apologize for having a decent PC, the newest Trainz, TransDem, a first-class ticket, and quite a few pieces of payware:hehe:

I agree that this is a problem but I feel there more to it then that. I can't see everybody clearing out because of that alone. I guess some of us folks that have been around awhile need to bit our lips instead of lashing out at the youngins.

I can agree somewhat, I've seen messages with people saying "I downloaded Trainz now how do I install it?" If you stumble into that one trying to help, you're going to slide down the slippery slope from helping to doing…

Demanding, I've seen that too. I had somebody recently ask me to create a 100 mile stretch in TransDem. My wife is always telling me to be more diplomatic, so I replied to him that it would be a rather large endeavor and while not impossible would be better done on one PC, breaking the route up into 16 or more pieces etc.

I get a reply from him "okay so you can upload those and I can re-merge them together in Trainz":hehe:

So I wrote him back, ignored my wife's advice, and explained to him that he was only 30 bucks and a little learning away from completing his project…

Hopefully this time he got the message…

I've tried to contact a couple of the older creators to get permission for modified assets and yes it seems they're just flat gone. Lars's e-mail over at trainzproroutes even bounced back.

I just know what I've experienced since being back the last few months after I got 2010. Just a heaping helping of disdain from those who refuse to move past Trainz 2006.

but some want us to do that everytime. its common in todays youth. there the gimme pigs. they want other people to do everything for them. some learn that its not acceptable. others ignore the advice given

gimme pigs, that sums it up:hehe:

By the way you ain't the only Union Pacific fanatic, if it ain't UP, it ain't for me:D

The way I'm seeing things now is that very little new stuff is being created, It seems that most of the creators (that are still around) have gone to payware only. It seem only a very few are creating for the DL Station. Even the TRS2004/2006 hold outs are not creating much anymore.

We need to get more creators creating for the DL Station again.

Complicated game for a lot of people, and a lot of people are buying a 'train game' who haven't before used a very sophisticated computer game at all. My 2010 DVD loaded fine and updated fine, and I'm happy enough, as long as I don't have to play on these silly routes full of wavy trees. Happily, I can make my own route, as I've done since version one. People buying this game to share with their grand-kids are going to go through future-shock and a steep learning curve, if they're not computer savvy enough to clean their machine. And, really, there's no reason why they should know: Bill Gates said he'd take care of all the details and all they had to do was open Excel and start typing. I find that the people posting questions are decent people, and the responses they get are sometimes very narrow and self-serving: "I got mine".

But, seriously, how long have you been reading the forum? because it's been this way since ts2004 -- content creators ( genius people who invented ways to make trains more than go roundy-round ) have been leaving forever because the updates and new versions threw their work out the window. The program started out as a decent model railroad sim, and then tried to take on the MS train-driver beast. Even that beast drowned in the bay, and Railworks is very pretty -- much prettier than TS2010, but so what? -- You can't do anything with it but have Kodak moments, and innocent people buying Trainz for that kind of moment are going to have video and memory problems -- unless they've already, as, say, I did, built a trainz machine ( I did get mine.)

I really think that the forum isn't a religious ceremony or manor affair -- it's supposed to be a help place, and, train-fan, in the middle of Union Station, when they don't know if their train isn't leaving that very moment, they push to the information counter and shout their question. Be polite, Trainz fan, show class -- be professional: help them, don't call security on them.

Which is why I have my own site anyway. It's so easy to really rankle somebody's feathers anymore it seems. I could see a lot more productive things to argue about them signature size and screenshot size, but some find those topics interesting enough to debate.

I don't know what to say, I can only surmise about what some of the veterans have said to me. But these were the same people who trashed TC's and 2009 and are continuing with 2010 and with the announcement of 2012…

Luckily though there are quite a few veterans (I being one) who chose to keep moving forward along with Auran/N3V and will probably keep riding the ride until the bitter end:cool:

Some will choose to get a life, but there are some of us who still just love Trainz…

That's called evolution. I know when I created content for the DLS (okay only a few routes and some modified assets) back in 2006, when I put them on the DLS there were numerous hoops one had to jump through to even get it live. THEN you would be deluged by e-mail from users who didn't get all the dependencies, wanted to whine about how it was broken, wanted to whine that you didn't put this in or take this out, wanted complete written instructions that they could print out and follow etc.

For me, (and I am a strange one I know, I do have a life outside of Trainz at least that's what I call it anyway) that was just way too much for me to deal with. If I was going to do that, I would damn sure want to be paid for it.

Another reason a lot of content creators moved away from the DLS was the unreliability of the DLS. I can put stuff on my site and when you download it you get all of it, my site has a 99% uptime, and it doesn't have the traffic that the DLS has, if it ever got to it I would be shutting it down.

Auran/N3V has given you the tools to create any assets you want. Blender is free, CCP is built in, and it's just something that every user should really learn to use.

I realize that there always people leaving but now it's really starting to show! Good post.

I agree that the forums(fora) are not like they used to be but I don't think that it is possible to single out any one cause. I believe that there are so many little irritants that together make the forum a less enjoyable experience.

What irritates me?

(begin rant)
Text speak.
Gross spelling errors and word substitution. Things like 'their' instead of 'there'
The 'Gimmie' posts.
Repeated quoting of screenshots.
No 'thank you' post when someone has been helped.
Posts that say "Ok I've fixed it' without saying how they did it.
Oversize signatures and people who think it is clever to ignore the COC.
Disguised swearing such as 's**t'.
People who post with a question that could be answered by searching.
(end rant)

Individually they are only petty irritants, together they mount up.

Rant over

Peter
