The Beginning of the End?

I didn't mean to be disrespectful of anyone. A recurring theme in this thread has been the grooming of more content creators. Take a look at the Total War Center. It's the forum for the Total War series of games. Each game has a section called "Mod Workshop." It has tutorials, walkthroughs, how-to's, and tools. All the information is right there in one place. I think something like that here, would help ease the learning curve, and get more people deeper into the creation process.

There used to be such a forum for developers............. sore point, I picked up quite a lot quickly from there.

Anyhow.

Start here........ http://online.ts2009.com/mediaWiki/index.php5/CCG/The_Basics_of_Content_Creation.
Use in conjunction with this now somewhat dated http://www.auran.com/TRS2006/global/files/CCG2006.zip

Not perfect but just watch the changes that are mostly on the Wiki, which could probably do with a bit more info being added.

Also there are a lot of Tutorials online for Gmax 3ds and Blender, was going to refer you to the Trainz Resources Directory, http://trainzresources.com/directory/ which is where most links etc are centralised only it appear to be temporarily offline. The site owner has recently been through a major operation which may be a factor.

Thank you for the information. I'm sure it will help a lot. My suggestion wasn't for a discussion forum, but for a reference library. A place where information like that would be readily available. I think it would be useful. If nothing else, it might cut down on the newbie questions that get repeated so often.

Zec,

Does the above post violate CoC 14?

14.....
The discussion of race, religion and politics; using expressions or language in messages that are considered foul, vulgar, hateful, bigoted, sexually harassing, racially offensive, or are in any way discriminatory. Whether the discussion or expression falls within this definition will be determined at the discretion of N3V staff and/or N3V appointed forum moderators.

Regards,

That's stretching and almost as much of a reach as when retro starts whining and complaining about other forums run by other entities but simply being Trainz oriented he feels they should follow the COC…

He also made reference to their domain name saying it was "official" sounding…

Not to mention he rode up on me tossing out the COC about an article I wrote for my website.

Now I'm sorry I really don't see a lot of vulgarity, what little I do see doesn't offend me. I guess I don't hang around all the really good threads because I've never seen anybody threatened. Ignoring the world outside of this forum isn't going to make it go away. I think that forbidding all discussion of the outside world to be rather fascist, but again that's just my opinion.

Here's another opinion Ron, myself and a lot of other older users look at retro and yourself and a few of the other "COC posse" as thread killers…

You ride in, and start complaining and threatening to report, like the little kid in school who wanted to run to the teacher because they weren't included in whatever was going on. We used to call them tattletales but there are more harsh terms used nowadays…

But you and retro need to get together and see if you can clean up the entire Internet, retro has already got a head start on you though:hehe:

I agree with you that things could be and really need to be more organized, I wouldn't want the job though…

Hi Everybody
I would agree that no forum whatever its base reference may be should ignore the world outside. Having said that I do believe that the moderators get the balance about right on this forum.

I know I am one that often wanders off-topic in my postings and for that I would apologize to forum members, but it is often in response to other members postings that I feel obliged to respond to.

However, one area where I think the forum could benefit from is a subsection for real life railway experiences and discussion. There are many members like myself who regularly travel on the railways, while I feel many other members never get the chance to actually use the transport method that their hobby is devoted to.

With the above in mind the threads in the section could not only create interesting discussion for real-life train users but also give insight to modern-day railways in all parts of the world for users and non-users. Trainz itself could benefit from the discussions with more prototypical conditions built into modern routes created for Trainz.

One example could be more passengers on stations for British modern-day routes giving a better example of people not being able to get on the Trains because of overcrowding.

just the thought:D

Bill

Sounds like your saying that the N3V CoC is selective and does not apply to all who post here.

If it is selective, then why have a CoC?

The MODS do a great job enforcing the CoC.... it is really their decision, not yours.

Thank you for your comments and opinion(s). I look forward to your reply.

You know -- and, it's embarrassing to have to point this out: there are people posting here who don't have English -- and, who can't find an Auran support section in Albanian, or something? And there are kids and old guys and college students, and each us has a language we think works to show what we are. Anyway, I'm 65, have a Masters in Photography and a minor in Philosophy, and I really think that a criteria of value based on spelling and grammar only addresses the value "class-distinction spoor", as in 'patronizing', and anyone with any linguistics knows that there's no English inside us to be properly spelled or grammared out ( none: Chomsky failed ). People are creative, and they use language to create a personality and mood in any dialog. You're doing this too, with your syntax and even your font style choice. If you're not creative and curious enough to parse a difficult text, though, why would I assume you're able to solve a problem? Especially, if you're only going to use the forum for a chat-style facebook experience? If you are, learn texting and go for it.

I agree with your points Peter. The point of the forum is to communicate. If a poster makes it difficult for me with creative spelling and grammar I'll move on.

I don't think it would be that bad. You wouldn't have to create the content, just list what's out there and where to find it.

Regards,

Actually I'm not advocating that it be more selective towards others or applied to anyone differently.

The point I was making, was that in a thread highlighting and pointing out what a particular person had said earlier in the thread is not "a personal attack" and as such against the COC. Way too many times, and I do mean way too many when a discussion or debate is going on in will ride somebody who isn't a moderator and who generally hasn't participated in that thread and will throw out a message about the COC being violated…

Now if you resemble that remark, I'm sorry. But the COC posse (as I like to call them) knows who they are. I think they have moderators here for a reason, I think they should be here for a reason, I think they should do what they do and I support everything they do.

I just think they should be the ones allowed to do it. Now I know that you're going to say "well they can't watch everything all the time" and that's probably true. And if you were to report threads you thought violated the COC discreetly, I wouldn't be writing this response.

But it seems to me anyway, that whenever there's a spirited discussion (however close to the COC it may dance) a member of the COC posse swoops in and tries to kill it by bringing up the COC in bold letters.

Now if someone can't mention the name Thatcher in a post or the word bigoted in a post, then we are not dealing with a forum existing in the year 2011.

If someone wants to complain about a forum run by a completely separate entity, that since it has to do with Trainz it should also be covered in the COC etc. if someone wants to complain about articles written on individuals websites complaining that they should somehow fall under the COC, to me anyway that smacks as totalitarianism, which is a word I'm sure you'll find objectionable under rule 14 as well…

If we were in the 1950s and this forum was being run I could really see being so hypercritical. But this is 2011, things some of us older people find objectionable, doesn't even phase the younger generation, and some of us older people aren't really phased by it as well.

So what I'm saying is simple, if you want to report a post, the option is there, you don't have to go into the thread trying to remind everybody about certain subsections of the COC…

Unless of course you've become a moderator and I'm not aware of it…

And the same goes for retro and all the other COC posse…

Hi all
A very interesting thread so far.

As some people have said, new creators are still coming and old ones are leaving. I'm trying to learn as fast as I can, but it does take time.

The use of English and spelling: People on here need to know that in the train hobby, it does get more `challenged` minded people (I hope that is a P.C. correct term?) and that they may not be able to spell or correctly word a sentence (I know that I find it hard, and I have a high I.Q!).
Also, we do have non-native English language people on the forums so maybe some give and take is needed?

Just one comment that I need to make. One poster has said that sexist remarks have been made on these forums. Where, pray tell?

Final thought. Two posters have mentioned my lovely Government in a bad light. As a supporter of this Government (where were the Unions when us private workers had a pay freeze?), I have reported the both of you to M.I.5 (especially you, Mr Wholbr) as terrorists of the state! :hehe:

Best Regards.

As someone who's murdered the English language most of my life and couldn't type my way out of a wet paper bag, I wound up using Dragon NaturallySpeaking.

Now as long as I haven't been drinking:hehe: I can usually communicate in a way that is decipherable.

But yes there are a lot of people where English isn't their first language. I think I've noticed a lot more from Eastern Europe and the former Soviet union areas of the world in the last year or two than there used to be. I even noticed a lot more Russian keyboard fonts than there ever used to be.

I'll always try my best to help, and a lot of times I do so via PM. My main criteria for responding to posts is mainly if I know the answer or not…

I am upset now CaptEngland that you have reported me to MI5 as I was hoping they would not recognize me as being the person daubing on the wall of the Ritz Hotel on Saturday.:D

By the way, I am retired ( semi) but i was up there in support of my former work colleagues in the road haulage industry (private) also on a pay freeze but they are union members.

I bet we will both be reported now:hehe:

Well that being the case, I will confess it was also me who put the crush barrier through the window of the bank after I had painted on the wall of the Ritz.

However, you will all miss my postings when I am serving my minimum sentence of five years hard labour

so, goodbye forever
