Hello Community,
The 2010 Route Building Competition is set to go underway beginning,
December 15th 2009
and will end on April 2nd 2010.

We have a theme this time around!
Port Railroads: Your challenge will be to build a railroad based on a freelance or prototypical port with an operating railway. Your layout needs to be 3-8 Baseboards and must be built from scratch, meaning you may not enter routes built before December 15th 2009.
If you would like, you may host a YouTube Video showcasing your route and send it to the Committee, this is optional.
Johnk will be hosting the screenshots on his website and will give further directions when he can.

The 2010 Committee Includes the Following:
illinoiscentral event coordinator
JRT assistant coordinator, judge and sponsor
Johnk business supervisor, sponsor
Evan123 judge
Dap judge
leeferr judge
American_Connections judge
brickbuilder711 judge
We will be having a prize for the top winners.
Jointed Rail.com will be providing the PRIZES, I just talked to Mike Cyr and he approved it.

There are a few rules that apply to the contest:
*No using pre-built routes.
*DO NOT enter routes that are not your own work.
*Please stay consistent and devoted to this project.
*Do not post unrelated comments on this thread.
*Do not post on this thread if you are not entering the contest.

Trainz Versions:
You may build your route in any version of Trainz from Trainz 1.3 to Trainz 2010.

We thank all of those who have supported this project and hope you have fun.

UPDATES: November 29th 2009, Please refer to all posts by Johnk for official information.
We apologize for any confusion this may cause.
A web site is in the works concerning this, and future Route Building Competitions.
Thank You,
Woody

So, GET TO WORK!:hehe:

We would like to thank our Sponsors;

Very good idea to start this early this time!
The theme is good too, very challenging I think, my gears have ground to a halt so this might be a good things to rewind my system!

You can count me in, I will have a plan by December 15.

One question! Does this have to be made in TS2010? Or may it be made it TS2009?

Cheers,
Adam

Which version of Trainz do the "Judges" use?

.......snip.....

Adam.... and excellent question.

Unless there is an agreed upon Trainz version that ALL the "judges: use....how can they make a judgment?

It would be a waste of time for someone to create and submit a route....say in TS2009 or TS2010....and these versions not be used by the "judges".

So then Woody, you need to tell the Community the version of Trainz that all the "judges" use in order to participate in this contest. Otherwise, how could there be a consensus by the "judges" of a winner.

Sorry, I have this nasty habit of thinking about things. This habit is attributable to old age.:)

Have fun,:)
Ron

Oh, how silly of me!

I must have forgot.

You may use any version of Trainz Railroad Simulator from versions 1.3 to Trainz 2010.

It is in our best interest to judge by screenshots and the like, and the YouTube idea is really what we push for if you are able to do it.

I hope that answers your questions and please accept my deepest apologies.

Cheers,
Woody
Event Coordinator

PS Ron, Like what you said about thinking...

Thank you for the information. So screenshots and videos are the key to winning? Sounds right up my ally. :)

I have a plan but do I have to start building on December 15 or can I start now? I know that if I start building I might be finished with the basic plan by December 15th. So could I start now or do I have to wait?

Some of these instructions are a little unclear, I think I ate so much turkey I now have a real bird brain. Or I am getting old, but at 16 I don't think I am that old. :hehe:

Cheers,
Adam

I have one more question for you.

Can it be more than 8 boards? I assume no but I would like to make sure. My current plan uses 14 boards.

Cheers,
Adam

So it is a screenshot competition then basically ?

Mike.

That is what it looks like, but only Woody knows for sure.

So, 8 boards.... 7 blank with a 1 line track, 1 board with "eye candy"... no route functionality, and.... we have a "Winner".

I am amazed at how well this contest has been planned.

Sigh.......

Have fun,:)

Obviously there are a few things that need addressed.

We are holding tight to the set rules, the 15th and only 8 baseboards.
We started the thread early as a heads up and so we could get entries.
We will not be accepting entries after January 1st.

No, it is not a screenshot competition.

Deepest Regrets for what was previously here.

As for the others,
Bare with us, remember that the contest does not start until the 15th and that we are doing our very best.

Thank you,
Woody

No, it is not a screenshot competition, I've explained that over and over in the past thread for last years. I will not answer that question again. In order for us to judge, with our varying versions of Trainz, it must be done that way.
If you don't like it, don't post and don't enter, we are not a complaints department.

Again, thank you for the information.

Aardvark1,

I see your concerns, we will be trusting that the contestants are honest, however this is for the mere fun of it.
Also, leave the explaining to me, you are not part of the committee.
I do not appreciate the way you are attempting to down talk this program and I'm sure I can speak for myself and the rest of the committee.
You may now leave this thread and keep your comments to yourself.
You may count me out in this due to how you treated Ron. He is trying to make it better and more fair, I guess you don't see it that way. I now know why you are on my ignore list in the first place. You may have changed to some but not to be.

I am now officially out of this pointless and very self centered contest.

Cheers,
Adam

Woody, I don't know if the way that you handled that was very professional. Also I can't say that I want to participate in this contest, if your going to treat people like that.

I too was going to put Woody on the ignore list but after some thought decided not to. I usually read the forum soon after I climb out of bed at 4:30 AM and Woody's notes usually get the blood pumping. Notice he is above 2000 posts now and has not been a member all that long.:(

Okay, I was a little harsh.
We had a family issue at the time I wrote that and I was in a bad mood.
Still, that is no excuse for how I treated one of my elders.

Ron, if you're reading this, please accept my sincerest apologies.

And my apologies to the rest of you for being so public about it, it was I guess 'barbaric".
For that, I'm deeply sorry.:(

Once again Ron, I'm sorry I had no right to disrespect you like that, you are older and wiser than I am, I realize you were just trying to help, I take back everything I said.

Thanks for Listening,
Woody

I may be able to get in on this one, but I will need to make time for it.....
but first a few questions:
Does the Rail system have to interact with the port? or can it be a bystander (passenger or metro that passes by the area)?

does the system need to loop onto itself or be able to run trains around like a train board?

Can any rail system/ transportation method be used? or is it designated to just two rail trains?

Rules? What rules? Seem as if these are being made up on the run. I would have thought in my down under Aussie ignorance that as this is a route building competition that the judges would at least have to see the actual routes, not just screenies and videos. Also as its a TRS2010 competition why allow any version of Trainz routes. May as well call it Trainz Route Building Competition in the first place.
:hehe: :p

The year it is set in, is 2010...

I would appreciate it if we could lay off the negativity for awhile.

How are we supposed to judge it in TS2009, if we don't even own it?
This is the best it gets, and why is everyone so picky, this is not a life and death thing, it is simply to have fun, yes, we can judge by videos and photos, lots of real competitions do that.
It can be done, and it will be done.
If people are honest and give us enough shots or a long enough video, we can do just fine.

Which is something i forgot to mention, we require at least 15 screenshots.
Sure it is dis-organized, but I fit that word, dis-organized.

Just please, bare with it, and for those who want to have fun with it, good for you.
Please, just give me a break I'm trying so hard to make this work, for once in my life.

Thanks,
Woody

Here's an idea!

How about competitors actually upload their routes to the DLS, then the judges can download and run trains on them. As the routes are only 8 boards max doesn't seem too outlandish an idea. Otherwise anybody could just send off 15 screenshots from a route built any old time, even years ago in TRS1.3

Hi folks,

I think Woody is under a bit of stress right now and he's asked me to step in and help a little with Rule making etc. Before you all go off the handle, I hope you've noticed that the starting date is 15th December, or about three weeks away. If we were to tell you what the rules are today, many of you will jump in and start modelling immediately.:)

Thus the final rules are being held back until the Dec 15th. After that you may break out the shovels and start digging.

So far you know that your route must consist of:
  • 3 to 8 baseboards
  • A port theme which sounds great to me.
  • And the competition finishes on the 2nd of April next year.
What comes next is something you'll have to wait for closer to the starting date. In the meantime, I'm going to have my ten cents worth:

The Trainz Resources Directory will be supplying two prizes in the way of First Class tickets. First Prize will be awarded a 12 month FCT and second Prize will receive a 6 month FCT. I may increase the prize pool from my side, but as the TRD doesn't generate any income, the money is coming out of my pocket.

Jointed Rail has also offered prizes. I've contacted them but haven't received a reply as yet. Thus I have no idea what's being offered.

There will be a special web site devoted to the competuition because I hope that it will be the start of a new era. I'll announce the URL of the web site in a day or two.

The web site will have a gallery and each competitor will be given a password so that they can upload their screenshots. More on this later.

It's impossible for the judges to physically judge the routes because there are more incompatible versions of Trainz out there than there are judges. Also, several prospective competitors have demanded if you like, the right to use personally designed assets or assets downloaded from the DLS. How can we possibly expect a judge to download those assets just to evaluate a route?

What we need to do before December the 15th is this:

We need a show of hands to see who wants to enter the competition. Before you start waiving your hands in glee, wait a few days to see the web site to see what joining in actually means.

The rules aren't going to be stringent, but people who volunteer to start, but don't get past a certain point may lose points in future competitions. A bit like a golf handicap if you like.

The more people we get to enter, the more chances we have of attracting additional sponsors. As of today there is a prize pool, albeit a small one, but hopefully it will grow.

Go ahead and sharpen your pencils and begin designing a route on paper. Whatever you do, don't start anything because there maybe a catch or two.

Here's what you can do for starters:
  • Sign up for the competition. I'll let you know how in a day or two.
  • Put your thinking cap on.
  • Start planning.
Here was my original suggestion for the competition. I nobody has any arguments, lets do it:
  • A mainline passing from one end of your route to the other. It does not need to terminate at either end, so you can add more boards later. The mainline can be electric, deisel or steam, slow or high speed. We may ask for this mainline to be one or two track. That's one of the catches.
  • There must be at least one station on the mainline. it doesn't have to be big, or even a regular stop for passenger trains.
  • There will be a branch or shortline heading to a port. I say shortline, because it may be narrow gauge, but doesn't have to be. The port can be a busy wharf or pier that handles containers, wheat, oil, coal, general cargo, sugar or whatever. We may ask for at least one ship to be present.
  • We may ask for loco servicing facilities to placed at the wharf or the station, or we may leave it up to you. That's another catch.
My suggestion:
Keep the baseboards to a minimum. You only have just over three months.
Concentrate on detail. Look at the screenshots here for inspiration. In my opinion, they are the best of the best.

I'll listen to ideas for a couple of days before submitting my final proposal and getting the nod from the committee, of which I'm not a member.

Please don't ask what if? or why? questions at this stage because I won't answer them. Just stay within the guidelines above and use your imagination.

Please folks, not attacks, personal or otherwise. The competition is being run for the benefit of those people interested in this kind of thing. If it doesn't suit you I'm sorry. Just remember that we're all different and what suits some, may not suit others.

Enjoy.
