I love quoting myself. Allow me to do so:

...I'm sure it'll wreck havoc with electronics/filters as well. Would hate to be driving through one of these things...

I'm quite sure that filters and electronics in that part of Australia have not been designed to handle dust on that kind of scale. Cars, planes, filters, vents...could suffer from this. From what I heard, they had to divert flights to other cities in the area as a result (a wise decision considering what dust would probably do to a jet/propeller engine)

You obviously don't suffer from Asthma. Cough....splutter...sniff!!!

The main concern is not only those for allergies but the smaller dust particles that might contain metals or other lovely things you don't want in your lungs. Those could be inhaled and wreck havoc at a future date.

Not counting any of these reasons, I'd be concerned if my backyard looked like Mars one morning, but that's just me...

Its not that i don't care about what its doing to our health and electrical systems i just don't see well lets go with how joe public are reacting to it all, Its like christmas has come early to some people ( none ive seen here or anything ).

Anthony, So why are you reading the thread? I went through a similar dust storm in Melbourne in the 60's I think and that was interesting. This one was far more spectacular and a lot of people are very interested. I just received an email with some rather amazing photos I hadn't seen before and I found them interesting also.

You're entitled to be disinterested, but it doesn't hurt to let those who are interested enjoy the moment. Or does it? If you find it all so ho-hum, there are other threads out there that should get your adrenalin rushing. I'm going off to read them now.

Ok ill stop before crap happens and leave, Honestly i just opened the thread because it was related to Australia :p

Well im sure some people in America or something would like to see the weird weather that is happening in Australia lately. :D
Its not everyday that you wake up and everything is foggy and dark red.
Unless your living on Mars that is. :hehe:
anyway an update:
There was ment to be another light one today but it didnt happen.
But it has been really really windy :p so yeah.
very windy!

cheers guys.

Well my brother in law was so concerned about the dust & what damage it was doing to his precious car not to mention it didn't look like his pride & joy anymore but more like a car with a bad heat rash.

The solution was to start it up drive through the dust then wait for an hour in a queue at the local car wash then drive back home.

For his efforts he now has a dirty air filter & a nice wet car for the dust to really stick to as well as a red interior as he also decided to drive home with the windows down to air the car out to get rid of the dust smell which he forgot to wind up when he went inside when he got home.

Hi Bernhart,

The Great Barrier Reef will be OK as long as the dust storm does not "muddy" the waters. :hehe: :hehe:

Cheers,

Bill.

Canberra was so bad on Tueaday had to clean my wind screen 3 times in the one day, the airport was closed.

Must have got a lung full of the stuff as I have been coughing it up all day.

On and out black and white cat is now red and white that was rather funny.

I live in Newcastle which is like, a couple of hundred km north of Sydney, and this is what it was like in my street at 7:30 this morning...like living on Mars..

Ouch!I bet having those kinds of conditions has got to make it hard for you to see where your going and tasting dust at the same time!

WOW. When they enter the cloud...wow. One of the best videos I've ever seen in a long time...very frightening!

Have to agree, it was a great video. I saw another one with the same results. A lady in Broken Hill made a video from her backyard, the sky was red then got darker until it was just like night time.

A rather scary time I think.

I agree with that! I don't think hanging out in the streets while in the middle of a dust storm is a good idea, not to mention the chance of a accident while trying to see the road while trying to drive a car at the same time, that makes it so difficult to see!
