Sydney's Red Dust Storm! amazing!

Did anyone see the Red dust storm in Sydney early this morning? There are some pictures on Yahoo7! and other websites.

Dont know how it happened but the Red Dust blew in from somewhere, it covered mostly all of NSW.
Theres been some weird weather today lol,

I woke up early this morning, i dont know why, and saw that EVERYTHING was red! i was shocked lol.
Its clearing up a bit now but my house is covered in little red dust particles.


Did anyone else get this at their house?
 
I live in Newcastle which is like, a couple of hundred km north of Sydney, and this is what it was like in my street at 7:30 this morning...like living on Mars..

Wow that's eerie!

Out here in South Korea, we get similar storms that they call *yellow dust* from what I guess is the Gobi desert. They close schools and stuff for this and I couldn't believe it until I actually saw this yellow haze in two different cities (Busan and Seoul).

I'm thinking that this will become more commonplace with changes in the weather directly related to global warming and desertification/the increase in desert's sizes.

Let's hope these dust storms don't become common in the near future...I'm sure it'll wreck havoc with electronics/filters as well. Would hate to be driving through one of these things...

It did look pretty cool though, i would have loved to been in the city at like 4am :P It was seriously red, then it started to turn orange.
Now its just cloudy with some spots of orange :P
And dust is still flying around.
 
No sepia filter, but pretty soon I'm expecting someone from Sydney will say 'but Newcastle is like that every day of the year'! (it has a reputation going back to its steel-making industrial past).

The dust storm is apparently coming from Central Australia and last I heard is heading north to Brisbane (Queensland). I also read that some of the storm and dust may reach New Zealand :eek: .

Before the actual dust storm hit the Eastern Coast of Australia, 2 men where trapped down a mine (about a Kilometer I think) due to the winds damaging the power supply. The lift automatically shut down, they where very safe but spent about 24 hours underground.

Very strange and amazing weather.

I woke at 5:30 to an eerie red glow coming through the blinds... similar shade of red in burntruss' shot. No exaggeration.

First thing I did (other than shat myself) was race out back to check out the bushland that backs onto my property, thinking FIRE!!

Was very bizarre to say the least. So when all the other thoughts of nuclear war, being transported to Mars, or being on the set for the next Resident Evil movie, finally passed... was obvious what it was. Literally tasted and choked on dust... then when I finally got to work my eyes were stinging a little.

Despite a near cloudless day, the sun finally made an appearance around lunchtime.
 
Back on topic, The weather all over the place has been odd to say the least this year.
Here in Edmonton Alberta Canada its been one of the driest summers on record and a very cool (well below average) In July alone there were two nights that we had frost unheard of for that time of year. And now in the month of September we have had 5 record breaking days with the temperature hitting over 30 degrees C (91 F) Today its already 30 C and we still have about 3 hours of temperature rise. It may still hit 34 C (96 F)

According to our met guys the westerlies may well bring some of this dust over here today. But look on the bright side maties; once enough dust has blown outta the central deserts it'll be below sea level and you can create an inland sea by digging a canal from the coast to the centre...:confused:

Now where's my inhaler...?:(

I've been on the computer for a few hours now, but just saw this weather update on my iGoogle home page. I've never seen the current weather icon brown like that before.

On venturing outside, I was unable to see the mountains which are only 2 kilometres away. Visibility is down to about 1 kilometre and the dust looks more like heavy bushfire smoke.

I'm bringing this up because I live 1,800 kilometres from Brisbane and about 2,500 kilometres from Sydney. It's the same dust cloud!
