suitable coaches for steam tram?

I was wondering what sort of coaches would be used on a steam tram? I have a terminal station which links to a steam tram to take people to catch their boat at the docks, so I was wondering what coaches would be suitable and how many would make up the train? Would it have a guards van at the end?
Oh and unrelated to the above. how far ahead does a train look when looking at points? is it 2 or 3 junctions? And at what distance from the points does it lock it?

Thanks

~20 meters unless it was set to something else when the route was made. (Each switch can be set independently)

There were also steam trams which ran along city streets - similar to the later electric ones with trolleys or bow collectors (UK terminology) - and these pulled trailers which looked just like a horse or electric tram, the latter without any power collectors of course. Birmingham was one city where these were used - they were usually introduced after the earlier horse trams. Thes would make a good model! (I wish I had the skill ...)
