Still in the dark

I had some health problems so I'm just now trying to pick up with building my layout again. One thing I don't understand is I thought Shane Turner provided me with a listing of updates and I ran the 49922 to 57825 but the number when I open the program is still 49922? If I must do it again where can I find that update? I also remember how frustrated I got back in May when I tried to fix problems. I found you can not make any changes to track that cars or loco's are on. Using the driver to take the cars some other place results on the cars coming back when you go back to the surveyor. YOU CAN SAVE THE MOVE BUT YOU CAN'T GO BACK TO THE SURVEYOR WITH THE CARS GONE.

By the sounds of things, the patch failed - as for not being able to change track when a consist is on it, this has been the case for a while now.

For reference though, most of the service packs are at www.auran.com/servicepacks. If it fails again for some reason, post the exact error given by the patcher.

Three times I have typed out replys and three times when I got to send it I'm told I'm not registered. I have to register before I can type my reply. Now What!

That's a bit odd, and possibly one for N3V as well.

I'm going to make this short. The longer ones took me to long to write and I think the connection may have timed out. The conclusion in my mind is that you have to save the current car location (out on the route) to keep the cars that the way freights leave in the industry sidings. At this point the route and the car locations are correct. You can save it but if you close the "driver" to get to the Surveyor the cars end up back in the yard. In effect the program stores the info two ways. One reflects the latest version of the route the other where the cars & locos are when you save them. That is why the next time you call in the program you must resume the session to keep the cars in place but you will lose any new construction. I hope I'm missing something but I've tried everything we can think of.

As far as being timed out while writing a post is concerned I am assuming you have not ticked the stay logged in box when you first login to the Forum. If you tick this it keeps you logged in while you compose your posts and also between visits to the Forum.

Your problem with consists not being saved to a position you have driven to in Driver is because the session you save in Driver is not the same session that you save when creating the original session in Surveyor. The Surveyor session is always the same unless you modify it in Surveyor. If you need to move consists so that you can modify the route then you need to move them in Surveyor not Driver. This is a bit brief I know but if you need more help on this then come back with your problems.

Before I fade into the sunset I wanted at least let you know that you were the one bright spot in my connection with Trainz. For that I am very grateful to you. My last attempt to reply was not one of those I tried to send you but from
another member who confirmed my suspicion that Trainz was not what I had hoped for. I’m going to include below part of my reply using your suggestion of “cut and paste.” If you read the next section you will get some idea of what I was trying for.

I started operations on my layout in 1968 and continued up until about a year ago. I’m proud to say I had a number of fellow model railroaders from around the country come down for a weekend to operate with my local crew. This was what made model railroading so great and an interesting hobby that was a challenge. I still have pictures of the layout and a video of operations at
www.eisanfamily.com/sou.htm.

Back in the 60’s and 70’s railroads operated quite differently than they do today. Way freights played a major part in there operation at least in many divisions. Trains consisted of many of the different types of cars and from hundreds of railroad names. The train crew had their hands full trying to switch the industries of a town and get out of the way of a passenger train or a fast freight. Cars would remain on sidings to be loaded or unloaded for a day or more until another train came through to pickup the cars.

Way freights do not lend themselves to Trainz. If you always used (resume session) in the driver you could get by. But how can you maintain or improve your layout “route” using Surveyor? Unless a single map (route) can be treated as a backup to all car & loco movement as well as track and objects that are added you can never be sure of where you stand.

I see that copy and paste worked a little too well there, but that's not a problem.

However, what you are asking is not possible, as once a route is modified in Surveyor, any sessions saved in Driver prior to that modification are no longer valid and cannot be used.

Thanks again for another speedy reply. How would you fix what happened yesterday when two of my former crew where here. We had run one way freight and it had returned too to the yard. The second way freight started to leave the yard but derailed on the last turnout. A close look showed the jct.switch had come loose. How do you fix this and still leave the cars & locos where they are

Unfortunately, fixing that properly and having the locos stay in the same place is not possible unless you manually move the locos in Surveyor, but that will affect every time you run it.

By the sounds of things though, the junction had reset itself under the train.
