Steampunk engines

@ Kegg_Works

Your climax land locomotive is exactly the kind of steampunk assets Trainz needs. Man, if I only had time to learn 3DSmax or Blender :'(.

Outstanding drawings man. Did you do those by hand? That ten wheeler Cab Forward would be the one I think easiest to Steampunk. Wild design, love it. THe Land Climax is interesting, though I would suggest it probably needs a bit more water storage and a bit less Coal storage. On the Brakes issues, you should read up sometime how Geared Locomotive Logging operators dealt with the issue, their reality was probably more wild then your designs (And thats saying something), lol.

Good Luck, and I'd be curious to see more of your work if you have anything else ready or would like to share,

Very much obliged, all! I've got a tone of locomotives drawings, but few are really steampunk. And yes, these are drawn by hand. I have very little digital art epxerience and about the greatest extent is using MS Paint to add lettering and trim work. Most are freelance locomotive designs and the majority are themed around narrow gauge. To say I have an obsession with slim gauge railroading is an understatement...

Here are some older steampunk locomotive drawings. These are done in pencil and unlike the ones presented in my previous post are not inked. (Meaning that the drawing was lightly sketched out in pencil and then using fine line markers/pens, the pencil marks are traced over with ink. Allowed to dry and then the remaining pencil marks are erased to leave the final sharp image)

And here is a drawing for a "Victorian Steampunk" locomotive I did several years ago, and it's in color.

I think the English Broad Gauge was of heavy influence here. And although not necessarily Steampunk, I have drawn a number of "What-If" locomotives. For example the "Mason Mogul". The hypothetical scenario is what if a 2-6-6 Mason Bogie was wrecked and rebuilt as a traditional tender loco using most of its original parts? And here is my answer to that question. (It's also one of my most popular drawings I've made)

Also here are some other examples of my more freelance locomotives. First up an 3ft gauge 0-8-0T. This I'm actually building a model of in HOn3 scale/gauge.

And some fanciful, but realistic small narrow gauge geared locomotives. A Heisler and a Climax.

Here are some other freelance engines I've designed, though these are all concepts for model railroad projects in On30. And as a side note, the road name has officially changed to Big Thunder & Western and these were created before said name change.

Again, some of these may not exactly qualify as "Steampunk", but I have quite an imagination and an eye for details. I do more than just side profiles also, I'm working on a comic as well when I can find the time.

It wouldn't. The running gear is buggered up six ways from sunday... They seem to have replaced the Piston Cylinders all together with random Cylindrical Tanks in the wrong spot, and they have what I think were meant to be a shady version of Eccentric Rods, but they appear to have connected them to the Axles, which would mean the wheels wouldn't turn at all......

Tack on the fact that they've replaced the Sand, and more critically, the Steam Dome, with extraneous stacks means you'd just vent all the steam you'd generate.....

It would appear to me, that what they have done is made a steam-punk Styled Barn Heater/Paper weight (For all those annoying 50ft by 12ft papers that always get blown everywhere...), assuming scale of 1:1.....

The Steam Punk Styling and coloring though is kind of nifty....

this was that engine i mentioned. in the game though it doesn't have a tender which kinda bugs me a lot. i mean the first three engines have em' but this one and a few others do not

another thing is this thing.. i have no idea what it is other than it has the look of a texas type but i really can't tell

That one actually looks better. Like if Forney lasted in the Locomotive business and decided to make a Drag-Freight Decapod, Forney Style lol. At least its easy to see it working mechanically. In the American Counting, it would be a 2-10-4-4. That 2nd to last truck would HAVE to have some serious play, unless the Tender would be articulated, which ultimately makes the lengthening of the frame rather pointless, but w/e.

These two "locomives" I think demonstrate a very sad trend in the Industrial Design world (Industrial Design by the by is read as what most would term "Product Design"). Everytime a Toy Manufacturer, or Game manufacturer wants to "Shake things up" with a Train, they always start moving things around with no real understanding of how the thing works or apparent care for being accurate to reality. This trend has, though unsurprising, moved into the cheap Steam Punk game world as well..... But the second engine at least demonstrates you can Steampunk something without entirely removing the heart of the mechanical principles that created the Steam Locomotive in the first place....

Falcus

yeah. funny thing its only in the videos of the game not actually in it. and yet the decapod is the best loco in the game, another odd thing is the ashford locomotive in the game. it looks like a diesel locomotive but its a steam engine it seems

class-a-vertical.jpg

A Steam locomotive doesn't have to look like a traditional steam locomotive to be a steam locomotive.... What it takes is no apparent "Broken Pieces/Principles"..... Theres LOTS of places you can take Steam Locomotive Design. You could in theory take say, a Carbody Diesel like an F7, drop a Boiler in it where the Prime Mover used to sit, put a geared Drivetrain/Cylinder Set up where the Generator used to sit, and run an axle up and down the center between the Trucks, just put an upside down Trough along the Fuel Tank, fill said Tank with Fuel Oil and add a Water Tender of your choosing on the back, BAM! Steam Locomotive...... It wouldn't be overly powerful, or have very great range, or really do anything aside from imitate an F7 in the form of a Steam Locomotive, but its still a Steam Locomotive that doesn't look like one.....

I'm all for using some imagination when doing things like this. What I absolutely hate is the insult to mine and everyone elses intelligence by the LACK of imagination demonstrated by some Toy, Media, & Game designers that think just "Moving things around a bit" and producing entirely impossible designs is an idea worth sinking money in to.....

Falcus

oh btw falcus i found a loco that might be diesel punk to you i think. it was based on the UP Turbine engines known simply as the rickenbacker in the game.

latest

The pic I posted was of a Climax A Class. Point is it doesn't look anything at all what most would consider to be a steam locomotive (Even though if you know what you're looking for, IE Boiler, Drivetrain, etc etc, you should be able to figure it out).

"Diesel Punk" would just be an evolution of Steam Punk as far as Im concerned. All the same thing. Taking old outdated technology and giving it a stylization twist. At least that thing could plausibly function as a Turbine Electric.

Falcus

i think it is possible to make that engine, cause we already have the turbine all it really needs is body work. but the lighting on this is amazing its got a xenon like lighting along it. headlights, cab lighting, the turbine blade and some other parts. even has its own freight set of matching car styles.

I made a few interesting models ( custom Models ) and the ideas you guys have are very interesting I may temp to make some of them at some point if I get my modeling dive back but lightly I haven't felt up to doing much with trainz...

Speaking of Punked I made a ods car with a different look the the budd cars ( Stainless cars )
dragonharh_20150302_0001_zpslsrdtkjh.jpg

This model ( GX-1 650 ) I used a GP and overhauled it with my own look I just keeped adding and this is how it turned out its one of my better pices of work.
dragonharh_20150317_0000_zpsawhulv4d.jpg

This one is a RS1 but mixed up to have a odd look to it making it into a havy huller. ( RS5-2 )
dragonharh_20150131_0001_zpsb6b91092_1.jpg

I decided that power and size of the modern Diesel a SD70m-2 to be exit and made it into a 140foot power house with the power to pull 25k tones pur unit its a best of a loco and Trainz biggest Diesel locomotive this monster can hall ass.

Back on topic I have plans for a super steamer but with insane power and a whacked look.
I can never model the real thing right so I do Custom jobs.

looks good dragon. the same game i play that has that turbine also had a maglev which was modeled after the A4
