Steam train rescues stranded passengers

and who said out with the old and in with the new?

Well they got it wrong again, there is still a job for the old. One thing you can say about the steamers they can work in worst conditions than our modern so called replacements.

Gave me a nice laugh

If you ask me, and anyone who has had a decent look at the situation were in, you would believe that 'Global Warming' is a complete load of bull. Burning fuel and emmitting Carbon Dioxide into the atmosphere doesn't do anything to the planet. But what the problem is, is that we are running out of fuel....very bad. But Chris' mention of burning methane will, if you ask me, do the trick. And if any Australian has seen those ads on TV that say
'The main producers of CO2 emmissions are, the transport, energy, and....livestock industries. Go veg, Go green, save our planet...'
Don't be so gullable, as I said before, Global Warming is a load of bull. And, yes, you DO NOT have to eat vegetables for breakfast, enjoy you bacon & eggs!
Methane can be used as a fuel, so that, it think, along with hydrogen, is our next step.
Methane is the answer to powering trains. But I think we should go to steam for 4 reasons:
1. Steam is very reliable, and theres lots of water to use, and lots of methane, anything that would make a fire, would power a steam loco.
2. Steam locos are beautiful pieces of machinery, I would certainly like to hear the freight train, puffing through my hometown with 3 steamers as motive power, instead of the 3 diesels.
3. As far as I know, steam is faster than diesel, in most places anyway. Of course electric would beat steam, but has any DIESEL done 126mph before?
4. Like we have just seen, steam isn't affected by any weather, unlike diesel and electric who can't survive Christmas:hehe:.
Speaking of Christmas, MERRY CHRISTMAS!! Have a safe New Years too!
Thanks
Mitch

I agree with this, and all of the accusations of steam locomotives being unreliable is not how I view it,sure they smoke alot but that is what we like about them but they have something that makes people wanting to come back again to ride them which is more than I can say for diesels!:o

I much prefer steam to diseasels as well, but let us not start false claims.
We all know that the Mallard attained 126mph (once, very briefly, downhill) on a test train. The British HSTs (diesels) have for decades been performing in service on 125mph schedules, and are tested to 140mph.

The quote that I best fits this situation is this:

"Just because something is old doesn't mean that it's useless...."-Star Fleet Engineer Montgomery Scott

A steam engine is a beautiful thing. Go stand next to one and just LISTEN for a few moments and you would swear they have a life of their own...

They breath, wheeze, burp, fart, groan, moan, bark and complain. When the are hitting their stride, they bark, scream and yell to let you know a STEAM engine is coming, and you need to make way for them. They have a language all their own, all you have to do is listen to understand.

EDIT: Hmm after reading that, some may suggest that I water down the kool aid some.... :p

Hi All: I think with todays technology Steam could comeback..Look at what happened to the Streetcar..At one time it ruled we gotta have a streetcar..Then they said streecars were out..Buses were in(the oil companys won}.. Now lets look at the scramble to get the streetcars back..The people in general know what the Best thing is..Certainly not the politicians..But steam can be alive and well, I think there is a place for it..

Bob Cass:) :)

Well, I'm not going to debate Steam vs. Diseasel/Electric, but I really do hope that they consider these locomotives each year for replacing the incapable system they have now when the weather gets bad. It's all win-win!

Cheers,
John
