Steam-neglected by Auran?

Currently working on an extended and re-imagineered version of a UK preserved railway in TS12, I was somewhat taken by surprise that none of the UK Steam locos from TS2010 made it across. Luckily I have found some GWR items on the DLS which drop in to TS12 without error. Fixing errors may be easy but it's only going to work on your own install which is not much use if you want to share or upload the route and its sessions.

I'll admit, a few people like diesels but it's a pretty niche Market. (And I do have a soft spot for Deltics!)

I'd question your age before making a full reply Nathan, but I feel this needs a quantitive (I think that's the correct word) reply from someone who has "been there, done that, got the T.shirt".

I started 'train spotting' at the grand old age of 9 years of age, on Donnie ( Doncaster ) station, I was lucky enough to catch the change over from steam to diesel, as well as seeing the first of the 'Deltic' services (2 tone green in them days).

Yes, I have a soft spot for Deltics just as you have, so much so, that I was among the very first of the members of the 'Deltic Preservation Society', this was a few years before any purchase was made, when the hard work needed to be done, just to raise the cash for the first bid.
However, as much as steam is so much a never to be forgotten part of the heritage of British Rail & it's forerunners, the diesels of the 1960's up until the ousting of the Deltics by the HST in the 1980's, is a very varied & interesting era, you should not dismiss it without a second thought if you have any interest in the heritage of our countries railways.

They were glorious days to those that actually lived through them.

Kevin,

I agree. The 1950s to 1970s were interesting over on this side of the pond as well. Sadly steam was 100% retired by the time I was old enough to go train watching (spotting) with my dad. We had a nice small yard across the street where I lived at the time and he and I would watch the small Alco or GM unit swap out cars for the mills and branch to the papermill.

During these earlier years, there were numerous paint schemes, engine types, and brands out there. We had smokey Alcos with their retro 1940s-1950s paint schemes on them right along side the new (sic) GPs all painted in the B&M blue. Sometimes there were run throughs with New Haven and New York Central units. Foreign power always made things really exciting.

Today things are quiet. The new diesels are all EMD and look the same. Seeing a GP40-2 is not that exciting, and neither are the new ES series units. Granted the paint schemes are bit better than they were during the blue-dip years of the 1970s, but Guilford's gray and orange were not that great, besides they ruined the diesels by letting them rust out and rot. Seeing a GP40 smoke like an Alco is pretty sad!

I understand that for some people not seeing steam is a bad thing, but for those that grew up without it, it doesn't matter. For a lot of us this is probably true, but there are also those that like both. I happen to be the latter who loves a good steam engine as well as a nicely kept up diesel. I too have fixed many steam locomotives and run them along side my modern diesels. On my route, I've deliberately setup a museum so I can run older trains on the mainline or small branch. This adds to the interest in operations, and gives me a purpose to run the steam on my route. In addition to tourist operations, over here we also have dinner trains which run over a mainline. This too is a reason to run legacy equipment. For these I deck out the best looking cars and locos and have the train travel a short stretch of track at a leasurely pace. The engine then reverses ends and brings the consist back to the station.

So using a bit of imagination and combining the old with the new, or even foreign power, we can make use of the generous amount of moving power we have at our fingertips in Trainz.

Ken: I know there is alot of payware steam..I'm talking about whats builtin to TS12 and the hassles you go through to get freeware locomotives..Things have changed at N3V, the policy of accepting things have changed..Forcing all of the creators to update their material..

Bob: I made the comment about Paulz Trainz as Nathan said they didn't work in TS12. We are fortunate in the UK that we have a number of very talented third party creators who like steam. Ben Neal and Prowler901 were the only prolific US creators that I can bring to mind.

I personally don't believe that it is N3V's job to create freeware locomotives their's is to provide us with the Trainz infrastructure.

I agree, Ken.

You are very lucky having as many steam creators as you do. I wonder if this is because of the late termination of steam in the UK compared to the US.

Probably helps, another 50's / 60's kid here, plus of course now we have an awful lot of Heritage Lines, new ones appearing every so often as well with a large number of preserved working Steam Locos, some of which are permitted to run on mainlines for specials and suchlike which keeps the interest alive for quite a wide audience.

Very true, Malc. I didn't even think of that. We're not so lucky here. There are only a few preserved lines and these are isolated for the most part. Sadly our railroads are anti-tourist and rightly so with our litiguous society over here.

Hi All: JCitron brought up a good point and this could possibly be part of the answer why there is not a lot of steam in TS12..Until the Freight Railroads of America realizes that there is a market out there for passinger traffic, we will never gain anything in our economy or infrastructure..They are so busy trying to maintain the top in Freight that they are overlooking things..Kind of like A horse with Blinders on..Looking only ahead not to what is beside you..N3V has the same type of attitude towards steam..Lets give in our games the same attitude That america has..(Our regional version)..I cannot speak for Europe..

Apart from the PB15 loco, there were two, probably now forgotten, steam locos in TRS2006, a 2ft gauge Shay and the same gauge Garratt in the only narrow gauge route ever included in a Trainz release, Northbay County.
