Ed is very right in the opening post by advising that economic's always decides the future of railways all over the world. Railways are no different from any other business and although they may receive subsidies or evolve their entire existence from government support it is always the balance sheet at will decide the long-term future of any system.

There are many who call themselves "rail enthusiasts". However, the people who really keep the railways going are in the regular farepaying passengers or regular freight transporters who give their business to the railways. Those who just take the odd day out on the railways or those that think that railways are a good form of transport but contribute little or none of their own money towards it count for nothing in the eyes of the accountants.

Unfortunately the above statement is turning the mainly passenger railway in Britain into the domain of the wealthy or those who are able to have the very high fare cost paid by their employers as part of their expense account. It is those that are providing the main increase in passenger numbers as they try to avoid the clogged up arteries of Britain's roads system.

It's simple economics not enthusiasm that decides the future of the railways in any country worldwide

That's sad, but I agree this is all economics. There's not a big population in Garden City, KS. I stayed there a few years ago during a storm chasing trip and there were more cows than people there. In fact the air outside the hotel smelled like cow poop and the area didn't look much like a "garden".
