Somewhat new to Trainz

I guess I should introduce myself. My name's Dustin, and you could say that I'm an 8-or-so year user of Trainz. My first train siimulator was Trainz 2004, which I found in a drawer in what I think was 2004. However, I just got Trainz 2010 and 12 yesterday, and although Trainz 12 is working rather well, TS 2010 has been having quite a few problems.

My first problem is that Trainz 2010 occasionally goes into a different resolution. When it goes into a smaller resolution, windowing out and in can restore this effect. However, when it grows and renders the sim unplayable due to the controls being blocked, I can't seem to get back to normal resolution as easily. Is there any way to change the resolution of Trainz 2010 and put it in a window?

My second problem is with an addon. I decided to download Ben Neal's NYC 4-6-2 to test out one of his engines. However, the tender is missing a kuid <96914:504794>, which Content Manager says is unknown. I don't know if this is a result of this missing kuid or not, but my NYC K-11 is now black. What did I do wrong?

Both problems are shown in the below screenshot.

Thanks a lot, Kieran! Both of my problems are fixed, but I still have one more. For the K-11's tender, it's missing a kuid which Content Manager shows as unknown. Where can I find this kuid?

I recommend typing unknown kuid numbers into Google. I found a forum thread here that said that that kuid can be found in USRA Light 2-8-2, from SubPar Productions.

Unknown means that the kuid is not available at the Download Station, but might be found at a 3rd-party site, like SubPar Productions.

And to save you more time, here's a direct link to the page: http://steammachine.com/bdaneal/gbdl.htm

Kieran.

Makes sense, since Ben did also make the USRA Light Mike. I don't need the link, Kieran; I've been stalking his page for weeks now. :D

"Unknown" does not necessarily mean that it is not on the DLS.
If you actually enter the kuid number on DLS search you may find it in the black pages.
Sometimes I just use the authors kuid umber to find out who it is.
Maybe the author has a web site or trainz club.
It helps to check the config.txt to give you some idea what it is.
For instance hornsounds are EZ to replace.

By the way I just checked my backup files and I have it.

The process did downloading Ben's USRA Light Mike and restarting the program. I actually have all my problems fixed.

...Well, except for a ton of default stuff that became unusable in the process. These items were usable before, so why can't I use them now?

Regarding patching, if it has already failed, we need to know what the error was, as it's likely to fail again if it's after a certain point, and requiring a reinstall.

You will need the patch where the number at the start of the filename matches the 5-digit number on your Launcher screen, and the second number in the filename is 44088.

When I try to run the patch that comes with the launcher, I get the following script.

Checking for available disk space for patching.
Searching for patches...
Downloading patch file...
Unpacking patch file...
Failed to extract the patch archive.
Patching aborted.

My build number is 42203.

I tried to run the patch, but I immediately got a BSOD. When I restarted my computer and tried to run the patch, I got this error.

This patch file is not applicable to your current installation version. No valid patch operation was specified. Patching aborted.

In addition, my TS2010 build is still 42203, and I can't run TS2010 at all because of a flurry of "Bad Image" errors.his.

I really need help with this. Is there any way to recover my installation besides reinstalling?

Unfortunately, a reinstall is the only way to fix this, as the original patch failed.

What operating system (including service pack) have you got?

My OS is Windows 7 Home Premium. I used to have a different version of 7 before my hard drive was formatted due to a crash, and this version doesn't seem to work as well with anything. Is there any way for me to back up anything that I installed or created before uninstalling?

Yes.

Navigate in Windows Explorer to where Trainz is installed. Copy the UserData folder to somewhere else.

You can then reimport this folder later after you've reinstalled and patched.

Thanks, John. That's really going to save me some precious time when I reinstall 2010.

How do I open a Trainz file for repainting or changing of cab or sound? I've been a MSTS freak for a long time now, and repainting and aliasing has become a breeze for me. However, when it comes to Trainz, I don't even know how to find a single piece of rolling stock, let alone edit it. Also, is there a way to make copies of rolling stock for editing?
