We're in for a pounding here in Middle Tennessee tonight.
My water pipes have been froze for three days.
Getting water to drink from my grandma 10 miles away, and flushing toilets with water from the creek next to the house!:hehe:

Be Safe all of you!

with all due respect, can you please watch it with the capital letters because it is hurting everyone's ears and not to mention mine as well, thanks!
Ears?:o
Wow, I just found out my computer talked, turned out when I visited the French Forum, it speaks French!
I wonder if it can speak Swahile?

Oh bother, I thought you could only read the forum...

Have Fun,

Snow is always a blessing down here. Unfortunately, it seems to always skip over Chattanooga. Hopefully some tomorrow.:o

managed to get my gypsum stuck in the snow at West Burton last night and then had to endure a trip from Doncaster to Peterborough on this:

no heating and most of the doors had froze shut!!

YIKES! Soo much for 21st Centry technologies. Did any snow get into the doorway mechisim? Or had the snow+ice made its way between the door seals?

I've also heard another Eurostar had to be dragged out of the tunnel, I don't think Eurostars and TGVs were built for this weather, bearing in mind that Northern France lacks the winter element we get, although here in the South East, we rarely see anything on this scale, I mean, snow falls of significant quanities within a month is very rare, last time that happened is 1963 I believe.

And looking at the met office site, this is set to last a long time, the predictions for the next 3 days is more percipitation (Snow?), just look at Sunday's weather, its going to be horrendous if it happens.

I've never know the snow to cause soo many homes to loose power, I was one of them, enduring the coldest night with just gas and battery, I don't know how many homes, but there was 3,000 in Hampshire and Sussex without power yesterday, they must of had something like 20,000 without power. (Although, annoyingly, Chichester had plenty of Power, the A259 (Old Portsmouth Road) was fully lit and Bosham was fully lit, I could see the lights. Fishbourne? Dead as a door nail, all through the village - for 12 hours, thats roughly 850 homes itself.)
Oh well, Uni has given us a blanket ECF.

EDIT MUCH LATER: University of Portsmouth are closing for 3 days, I've never known it this bad. They are saying that they may well not open tomorrow. On the other hand, I am still suffering power outages.

well No,not really, I just made a mistake in the previous posts when I should have realized that it was a copy of a warning for winter weather!:(

Snow. What's that?

Just kidding! I live in New England where we get those old Nor'easters that dump inches and feet of snow on us during the winter and into the early spring.

The last storm that came through over the past weekend gave us 9 inches. This was on top of 6 inches from the previous storm, and doesn't count the little bit of icy rain we had in between that left my driveway as slippery as glass dish.

The bad thing about where I live is I'm on a hill. My house is in the gulley next to the road that goes up so my drive way is on a 7% grade. My second floor windows are at street level if this says anything about my front yard. If there's anything on the driveway, I'm stuck at home until it melts. Last year I got stuck for 4 days because it snowed, rained, then froze over night. My dad fell trying to put snow melt down. I went out to rescue him, and did the same. I fractured my hip, and bruised his elbow very badly.

We've been pretty lucky this year even with our grand total of 15 inches of snow so far. Last year this time, we were without power for 12 hours. Some areas such as Bradford, right across the river, were out for 5 days. A friend of mine in Lunenburg lost power for 2 weeks. It was so bad her pipes froze.

I hate driving in this stuff because of the idiots on the roads. A couple of years a go it took me 5 hours to get home from work. I worked only 35 miles from my house! By the time I got home, I was stiff (ran out of medication), and could barely get out of my car. The reason for the delay? Traffic! Idiot drivers either went too slow to climb the hills, or went so fast that they went off the road. The slow pokes would stop at the bottom of the hills so it was nearly impossible for my car to make it up the next one ahead. Here they are driving those huge SUVs the size of delivery trucks, but are too scared to move faster than 10 mph. Then there were the macho jerks in their 4wd pick-up trucks. These idiots would race along at 70 mph, hit their brakes, then skid off the road into the median. After that the traffic would come to a halt as everyone gawked at the mess.

This winter, so far I'm lucky. Being a full time student, school will be closed when it snows too much. The other thing too is I'm on vacation for the next month before the spring semester begins. Let it snow while I'm home!

And let me guess, drivers not taking the basics? A shovel (ALWAYS), a warm drink (Almost always), some warm clothes, etc. Even if you can only carry one thing, always take a shovel, I learnt this myself, the easy way.

EDIT: forgetting, carrying salt maybe helpful.

Snow way

Hi all - Looks like we are all getting it big time this winter. I am just waiting for the polar bears to turn up. They are out of snow up there so you know it is only a matter of time....... and penguins.

Have you guys in UK never heard of snowchains? I drive in snow quite frequently in winter here, because I ski quite a bit, and I always carry snowchains even though I have a fourwheel drive.

Cheers,

Yeah, we've heard of 'em.....:hehe:

but nowhere sells them - and why would they bother for three days in a usual year?

Winters here are mild normally, thanks to the gulf stream. This time we've got easterlies coming in from Siberia - a pretty rare event. 30 years since the next worst winter apparently.....

I think it's what you are used to. I think it was in 1982 London had half an inch of snow and the roads were blocked for three days.
The problem was that London is very close to capacity on the roads and the snow just turned it into one big gridlock.

Here in Ottawa we can get hit by 15 cms and no big deal, 30 cms and it slows the traffic down a bit though most people take the bus when a heavy snow fall is expected, the BRT (Bus Rapid Transit) is fairly easy to keep clear of snow. Chelsea Tractors work very well in the snow. Snow plows run all night long to clear the streets. We get about 230 cms per year but it varies all the way up to 400 cms sometimes.

Across the river Quebec mandates Snow tires November to March they help a good deal and compensate for Quebec's less efficient snow clearing.

I'm hoping for a few days without too much snow, my snow blower is in for repair.

:'( Sorry guys never been snow locally, though when I lived in Yorkshire, Uk early 60's, got cut off by snow for a week. Last few days local temps here in Western Australia 38,40,42,43,43 degrees C... on the coast Esperance they got a 47C!.. Thank heavens for air-conditioning. You all stay warm now...I like the sound of those Leopard skin snuggies! (good to see your posts again Euphod) Regards

Monongaahela PA (outside of Pittsburgh PA)

a winter weather advisory remains in effect until 6 am est
saturday.

the national weather service says that periods of snow tonight
will make untreated roads snow covered and slippery.

snow amounts will reach 2 to 4 inches in steady snow by late
tonight followed by potentially another 2 to 4 inches in frequent
snow showers friday and friday night.

on top of the 5 inches we already have

Hi John,

The problem also lies in the quality of the snow. If you get wet snow, which it probably is in London, with temps, below freezing it can turn to pure ice in a very short time. Where as in Canada and north of USA it is more likley to be dry snow, on which you can get at least some traction.

And there was me thinking you'd retired at 5,000 posts.

Boy, you're sharp John; I couldn't get that by you, huh?;) LOL.

Yeah, I actually did retire at 5000. I retired from spending so much time here, and posting so often. It was getting to be like another job.

Now I just throw out a comment here and there, and try not to be so anal about it. It works for me, and gives me more time for other things. The forum can be a hobby unto itself if you allow it to be, and like any other hobby there is a danger in devoting too much time to it.

Back on topic; we got snow, and are getting more, but it's no big deal because it's spaced out well, and the snow is light and dry. The lake effect snow should linger into tomorrow, but all in all for 8 to 12 inches it's not too bad!
