Small American Steam Locomotives

bdneal is right - I should have referred to the D&RG Fairlie as a double boiler Fairlie - not a double Fairlie. My booboo. It wasn't very popular with D&GW crews.

More weight on the drivers increases axle loading which requires heavier rail. Not something narrow gauge railroads would do unless absolutely necessary. $$$ ya know. NG railroads weren't exactly rolling in greenbacks, lol.

For maximum tractive effort 0-4-0, 0-6-0, and 0-8-0's if speed and other considerations are not a factor. All weight is on the drivers and generates tractive effort however locos like that aren't normally for mainline use. This doesn't mean a short product specific railroad couldn't use them exclusively - its just that very few (if any) did.

The only 3 foot gauge 0-8-0 I've ever heard of in the US was #7 on the ET&WNC. The D&RGW had some 0-6-0T's built from older 2-6-0's.
