Slugs Shay

Hey folks, Rich Blake's (Slugsmasher) shay has always been my go-to shay since it's release. But now the sounds are getting kind'a dated. Is there anyway to incorporate the Williamette sounds to Rich's shay #12. I'm not particularly a purist, rivet counter, so if things don't line up exactly, I'm good with that. It would just be nice to have something a little better then the less-then-desirable '04 chuffing sounds. I have no idea how that programming works, so I'm just asking...Thanks in advance. BTW...The Cass shay sounds are also a huge improvement if that makes any difference.

Looks like it goes in the "can't do" or "too hard to do" box

There is probably an engine sound associated with that shay. I shows up like this in the config.txt file:

enginesound <kuid:475298:100510> (near the top of the file)
4 <kuid:475298:100510> (in the KUID table at the bottom)

Or like this under "List Dependencies:

<kuid:475298:100510> CSRR Shay Steam Sounds

If you don't like the sound of that shay, you can look at other shays and find one with a sound you like. Then you Edit the config.txt file and change the KUID number of the engine sound for your shay (slugsmasher) to the one for the sound of the shay you like. Save and submit edits

Thanks Forester, but that's exactly how I thought it would be done. But when I point the config to the Cass engine sound. I don't get any errors, but I also don't get any sound. I put it back to Rich's engine sound and everything is fine.

Maybe there is some other configuration step I am missing. The Engine sound files usually have a series of .wav sound files for startup, running, etc. It could be the one you chose was not a match somehow. You could compare the sound files for the two engine sound assets I suppose.

Some of the older articulated steam locos for Trainz are actually diesels in disguise according to their config file and engine spec formats so a normal steam engine sound file won't work for them. There are ways to work around this, but it's not exactly easy or straightforward.

If I may ask, how can you work around this? I'm really eager to know!

Essentially what you have to do is substitute everything that is written according to diesel specs in the config file for a steam engine equivalent. It's quite a while since I last did this and each articulated loco that I did was a little different to the one before. For a start if the loco is running a diesel engine spec you'll need to get rid of it and change it out for a steam engine spec. The driving axle on an articulated steam loco is the crankshaft for the steam cylinders, - not any of the axles on the bogies. Once you've got that sorted it's all down to experimentation to find out what works best.
I modded Slugsmasher's Shay to operate over the Angels Branch and it sounded like it should and had heaps more low speed tractive effort than the original loco did.

Alright, I think I understand. Do you think this would work for mrtrain's PRR Class S1 steam locomotive? I know the S1 isn't an articulated locomotive but I'm really hoping to successfully apply a steam locomotive Engine Sound to it.

Sorry, I wouldn't know where to begin with setting up sound on a Duplex steam locomotive. Geared articulated locomotives function in a completely different way to a Duplex loco.

From what I can see the PRR Class S1 is already using a steam locomotive sound file.

That's alright! I appreciate it though!

Fair enough, but would it be possible to release just the e-specs and sound files? That way other Trainzers can download and then edit the original locomotives to make them use the new enginespec and sound files. That seems like the best way to share these files without violating any permissions.

Unfortunately the conversion is not as simple as changing an engine spec and the sound files. There's quite a bit more to it than that.
