Do you have a program that imports *.dae files and exports *.3ds files? It's best to use ONE program to create and export 3D models. As far as I know, only 3DS MAX, GMAX, Blender, and 3D Canvas can export 3D models to Trainz files.
What exactly are you doing when GMax crashes, and do you get any error message? Does it lock up or crash to desktop? Can you do anything in GMax without a crash? What file format are you trying to import?
