Simple Question - Simple Answer I hope

I am running the Appalacian Eastbound Coal scenario in Trainz 12. Using Cab Controls I am unable to get the train moving above 1 mph (using sand and no wheelslip observed) unless I select the AI driver and order Drive. For some reason he is able to get the train up to speed so once the train is doing about 8 mph I would like to take over. My question what is the correct sequence to get control of the train back to me. "Assign to Player" does not do it. I do eventually wing it after several hit or miss attempts such as "Stop Train", "Quick Drive" etc etc but I would really like to know how the experts do it.

Also I am unable to save the scenario part way thru as when I reselect the scenario I get broken couplers despite having gone several miles past the Save Point originally.

Thanks in advance
Peter

Hard to believe that 41 viewers are like me and dont know how to wrest control of a train from the tenacious grip of an AI driver. What exactly does "Assign to Player" mean if I don't get any controls to manipulate once selected? :(

From Ai to your control either use stop train or get off train.
Seeing as I haven't got 2012 I can only guess about broken couplers.
2 possible ways round this, hand control back to AI then save, on restart take control back.
Or bring the train to a halt and apply handbrake.

I don't have TS12 but can't you select quick drive in the upper right corner and in the popup window move the DCC/CAB slider to select whichever mode you want? If that option is not available, you should add the Quick Drive rule to all your sessions, if it isn't already there.

Maybe its just this scenario. I need to test it in some others but this one really gives me grief. Selecting Quick Drive and chosing Cab Mode doesnt result in the controls showing. I find that I have to tell "Wazza" the AI driver to get off the train then I go "Move to Train". Still no controls. I then change views and the controls appear.

The idea of putting it in AI before saving worked initially but then starting the saved game the train is doing like 86 mph in a 55 speed zone. It gradually gets under control. I let it go a bit and save it. Reload the saved game and as soon as I take over "Broken Couplers"

Had the same problem, thought this was just a badly made engine, and that I had to use AI. There seems to be several engines where you can't use the actual cab controls, but have to use the simulatoed cab controls at best. Seem to remember the China coal train had non working cab controls as well; and that's a diesel.

Still havent found any way of shoveling coal, but I guess there's a key for that that I don't know.

One of the weird things about this one is you try to get the train going by ensuring there is about 68% water in the boiler, selecting reverser full forward (75%) and slowly increase the throttle. Hit "V" to toggle the sander on and the train just sits there going less than 1 mph. You then hand it over to the AI driver and immediately the speed starts increasing. It is almost like the sander is not working despite the icon for it being lit up. I wish we could see what he is doing with the controls to get the response that he gets.

Shovelling coal

What should happen when shovelling the coal is the butterfly doors should momentarily open and then close. Once you hit spacebar however the doors just stay open the whole time. Not very good at all.

Press Key Pad 1, on the right of the keyboard, to open and close the firebox doors.

So, press KP1, spacebar, KP1.

pccitgo,
Check the wiki at http://online.ts2009.com/mediaWiki/index.php5/Content_Configuration for kind engine and kind steam-engine. DCC and AI use the dozen or so parameters in the enginespec motor section, mainly max-speed, max-accel and max-decel. The CAB mode in a steam loco uses the steam section which has about 50 parameters to implement the physics of a steam locomotive. The result is the performance between DCC/AI and CAB modes can be radically different, especially with the upgraded physics since TS2009. Older locos need an upgraded enginespec. Some have been made by Philskene and Billegulla and can be used by editing the loco's config.txt file to reference a different enginespec.
