The AZCR took delivery of two "new" wooden coaches from Hamilton Manufacturing in Washington this week. The decision to order a set of wooden coaches from the carmaker came out of the need for an increased capacity on the railroad's weekday steam trains out of Flagstaff - the new coaches are lighter than the steel-bodied ones currently in use by the company. The ruling grade between Flagstaff and Drake is an impressive 2.62%, and the tonnage rating on that section for AT&SF no. 1316 is 471 tons. 1316 can only pull 5 steel-bodied coaches out of Flagstaff, but can pull a consist of 7 wooden ones. The first two coaches pictured were due in June but delays caused their delivery to be pushed back to now. These coaches will have their lettering applied before being subbed into the weekday consist. The order is expected to take 2-3 years to be filled and includes the option for replacing one of the cars with an upscale parlor car.
