The Arizona Central unveiled their "semiquincentennial" paint scheme for locomotive no. 2321 at Flagstaff's Independence Day celebration. 2321 also ran behind Santa Fe no. 5000 on the weekend's excursion trains. The paint scheme is based on the Santa Fe's "bicentennial" scheme for five of its locomotives in 1976. No. 2321 will remain in this scheme through at least the fall of 2026 in honor of our nation's milestone 250th birthday.

Santa Fe 5000 ran in an unusual configuration this past weekend - due to the ongoing installation of PTC on her larger tender, the 5000's smaller display tender was rolled out and painted to run behind the locomotive for weekend excursions. This tender was never used in regular service with the 5000 - it was a Santa Fe standard 20,000-gallon tender (badge no. EX-111) that originally ran behind 4-6-2 locomotive no. 3427 until being put into storage at Argentine, KS in 1953. When the 5000 was retired and donated to the city of Amarillo, TX in 1957, this tender was included for display as the 5000's original tender was sold to a scrapper in 1955 (the 5000's current "large" tender is a replica of her original). The Arizona Central had plans to convert tender EX-111 into an auxiliary water tender for the 5000's mainline trips but these plans were shelved when a tender was put up for auction by the Illinois Railway Museum as surplus and purchased by the Arizona Central. Here is the 5000 being readied for the 76-mile round trip from Flagstaff to Clarkdale with her temporary tender.

Later in the week the 5000's new PTC system was fired-up and tested on the BNSF mainline between Flagstaff and Winslow, AZ. The 5000's PTC required a third dynamo to be mounted to the locomotive. Much like the UP 4014, 5000's PTC cabinet is located on the tender itself. 5000's system includes batteries to provide power to the computer - the dynamo charges batteries as opposed to directly powering the computers due to the computer needing a steady, consistent stream of voltage that the dynamo can't quite produce. The batteries act as a buffer for the PTC computer. While the PTC was just recently installed in the tender, the control stand and extra dynamo were mounted to the locomotive this past winter during her annual inspection.

This shot is of 5000 after just hitting the mainline, rolling past the historic Flagstaff train station shared by Amtrak and the Arizona Central.

Pulling into Winslow, AZ. The 5000 will run a couple trips to Winslow later this year for the city's annual "Standin' on the Corner" festival before heading to Oklahoma to head Amtrak's "Big Game Train" from Oklahoma City to Dallas, TX for the annual "Red River Showdown" college football game between rivals Texas and Oklahoma. After Oklahoma, the 5000 will spend a couple weekends running trips out of Hot Springs, AR on the Arkansas Midland before returning to Arizona in the late fall.

Being serviced in Winslow before the return trip. After correcting some minor hiccups, the 5000 will be ready for her fall mainline trips.
