Can this code easily be modified to use on a Jointed rail SD40 45 or GP40 or 38-2?

Depends on how their exhaust is set up (how many exhaust att. points), but yes it should. If more points, add a smoke2 tag and copy the contents from one of the other smoke tags (don't forget to change the name of the att. point afterwards!), if less, delete the smoke1 tag.
