Should i get TRS 12?

Trainz Man
I have been thinking about it and it looks great.... can anyone tell me some good things about it and some new features please? Thanks, Pat.;)

Doppler effect and multiplayer are new. New routes and some new content. I think 2010 was better considering content and compatibility mode.

Since Trainz 12 lacks backward compatibility with older content and I have no interest in multi-player, 2010 would be the better choice. (my opinion). I am also seeing considerable improvement in frame rates with 2010. At least 50% compared to 09 when using directX.

Also trainz 12 has the best framerates I have seen so far. Just depends if you don't need doppler effect and multiplayer then trainz 2010 will suit you.

That statement just isn't true.

TS12 is capable of running every piece of content available , provided that content is adjusted to fit the new content guidelines for native mode content which is probably 80% of the content on the DLS.

So to say it "isn't " compatible just isn't true, sorry.

And of course to the OP Satellite view in surveyor... My favorite new option...

Assets made for earlier versions are fully-compatible with TS12, with a small number of exceptions. Basically, anything that would work on TS2010 will work on TS12. About the only "compatibility" issue I noticed is that if an asset is missing a thumbnail container and is over a certain build #, TS12 will flag it as faulty. Which really shouldn't happen anyway.

That said, if I didn't already own TS2010, I'd buy TS2010 because of the sheer number of routes available (about 30) and that some have really interesting stuff besides standard freight stuff. The Maglev and Modula City routes are some of my favorites and I bought the full Modula City (as well as Cabon City) because I liked it so much. Or, more likely, I'd buy both.

mrscsi you are technically correct. I should have included the phrase "without modification" in that statement.

Well I own em all except for tc 1&2 , utc and just trainz I guess and I like em all. I even like 2009 more than I did at first after the service packs make it actually launch without a db repair:hehe:

Each would have its own pros and cons but if you got the hardware to handle it ts12 is just the benchmark graphically and functionally. 2010 aint far behind but visually and functionally ts12 for me anyway is the new benchmark.

I realize not everybody does the same things in Trainz, and I realized that if you look close enough there are some things even in TS12 that some people might have a problem with. I look at every new Trainz release as a learning experience. Sometimes I have to adapt to the simulation and not expect all the time for the simulation to adapt to me.

Now of course I get called a fan boy or a shill and I don't care. Because after all it's just a game or as I like to call it "the train set I always wanted as a kid but my parents wouldn't let me have and that I always wanted as an adult but knew I didn't have room for."

But I think if someone asks whether they should get TS12, the prudent thing is to find out what type of computer they have and then answer the question accordingly. Because it's not going to run on every computer, and sometimes advising to get an earlier product may be the prudent thing to do.

Routes/content in TS12?

I use TS2010 and the route I have been working on for almost two years began in TC1&2 and relies heavily on content from Metropolis-Modula City (specifically some of the buildings, the elevated metro track that runs above the street, and elevated and ground metro/light rail/tram stations). Since that route is included with TS2010, importing my route from TC1&2 to TS2010 worked fine. Questions:
1. Is Metropolis-Modula City built into TS12?
2. If no, would the Modula City specific content still come along with my route, or would I have to download those items from the DLS. I have a FCT so that's not a problem.
3. If the answer to question 2 is no, my concern is whether that content is even available on the DLS. I can't tell since you can't see DLS assets that you already have installed (local). Ideally I would like to hear from someone who transitioned a route from TC1&2/Modula City to TS12.

Thanks.

Well, I'm sitting here killing time waiting for a muse that will help me finish my TS2010 route, so I'll take a shot at saving it to a CDP and importing into TS12, see what happens. Back in a while.

EDIT: Missed the first part of the question, no, it's not built into TS12.

1. Metropolis - Modula City is NOT included with TS12.

2. No, but the content is available on the DLS as far as I can tell. I just saved out the route from TS2010, imported it into TS12, and all of the content is available on the DLS if not built-in, as far as I can tell.

Adventures in rebooting

Well, I tried it, about 200 dependencies not built in but all on the DLS, 38 megs worth. Downloaded all that, then the usual checking dependencies for missing dependencies of their own, in addition to a few dependencies of the route that the download helper missed for some reason. Route itself shows no missing dependencies, no errors or warnings, once that was done. The usual plethora of yellow warning tags on many many many dependencies, a sampling showed most were the usual no thumbnail, obsolete build number, or progressive meshes no longer supported.

Loaded route, create session, crash, send/don't send, reboot. Loaded again, create session, place engine and a few cars, save session, crash, send/don't send, reboot. Opened content mangler 3.5, checked for faulty-true nada, missing dependencies=true, zip point diddly squat. Theoretically if the only thing wrong is dependencies with yellow warnings it should work, so try again, drive the session I saved. Took a switch too fast, derailed, send/don't send, reboot. Loaded again, made a new session in Downtown Traction using the same consist, ran around for ten minutes, derailed, restarted session and derailed again at 75mph into a spur, no problems. back to metropolis modula, ran up to the same switch to derail, send/don't send.

Dunno what to think, there's apparently something TS12 don't like about that route, altho it doesn't show any errors on the route itself, and the loco and cars are all build 2.9 and later, all error free. Conclusion, if you get TS12 you should be able to import your route and get all the dependencies, possibly some of the dependencies will need to be fixed. It did occur to me that the DLS cleanup project should have started with all the built in assets from TS2010 they uploaded for TS12 users, of 800 assets I now have installed in TS12 which are not built in, 242 of them have warnings. 191 of those were assets downloaded for this route, which presumably were built into TS2010.

Thanks RRSignal re TC1&2 content on DLS for TS12

I figured that since they were no longer offering TC1&2 for sale, the content that came with it would be available on the DLS even if the route wasn't in TS12. Contrast that to when I tried to save Modula City content as .cdp files to import into TRS2006 - that wasn't possible and you can understand why.
