Seeking NH Info

I am interested in building a layout in TS2009 based on the New Haven's (NYNH&H) electric operations. The idea is that it could be populated, in different sessions, with early (1920s-1940s) or later (1950s-1967) locomotives/rolling stock and for different operations/times of day (rush hour commuter, day passenger, night freight). Portals would provide connecting traffic.

I'm looking for sources that would describe (ideally) some typical days' operations on the line - beyond the usual monograph's "in 1915 the railroad ordered 21 EF-1 locomotives from Baldwin-Westinghouse," etc.. This is meant to be fun, not a master's thesis, but it would be fun to work through/illustrate some of the special problems they encountered and solved.

Any suggestions for books, sites, etc. welcome!

I'm no NH fan, but I could give you some tips on where to find info. Maybe search Google for NH fan sites? Also, "Trains" magazine has done a few stories about the NH.

Just trying to give some advice.

Good Advice

Thanks! That *is* good advice. Just by following links wherever they lead (and remembering to put "new haven" in quotes for the search string) I've got a neat article from 1928 on how the Cedar Hill yard worked and an offer of the employee rule books (large files!)

Not sure how you'd do it in Trainz, but the practice of using car-riding brakemen instead of retarders in hump yard operations looks fascinating (as well as just a little dangerous). With speeders to bring the riders back to the top of the hill for the next run via dedicated return tracks.

New Haven resources

Dude their is a three book pack containing "Classic American Railroad", "More Classic American Railroads," and "Classic American Railroads Volume 3" All written by Mike Schafer. In the second book "More Classic American Railroads" their is a chapter on the entire New Haven Railroad. From it's early days to it's years up untill it becoming part of the ill-falted Penn Central and what remains of this great railroad presently.

Thanks for Book Info

Thanks, GS41995. I'll see if I can find an electronic preview, then purchase it (or maybe get it via interlibrary loan).

Has anyone made New Haven (mini left-handed) semaphores for Trainz? I've got the signal system working in my Harlem yard, so it should be relatively simple to replace the generic spotlights with corresponding semaphores.
