Searching for electric loco...

Hi all, i am making a route that has passenger trains running off 3rd rail and freight using diesel and overhead lines... However i am struggling to find an ideal electric loco for freight.

This train would ideally have a top speed of at least 125mph (although i would be happy with over 100mph) and be able to carry a decent amount of freight without affecting performance to the point where it takes 3 hours to reach top speed.

Other than that, i am not really bothered, although i would like it to look modern and i don't care if it is a train in development (as my route is set in the near future anyway).

thanks in advance

If it's in the future, then the chances of anyone having produced fictional locos to match your individual requirements are likely to be slim indeed. Is this route set in the UK or elsewhere?

If you don't want to run prototypically, change the engine specs of some existing locos so you can run them at entirely unrealistic speeds (eg, give a class 86 the spec of the TGV). That's probably as close as you're likely to get.

I don't think there are any true 'tri-mode' locomotives in the world, there are plenty of dual-mode (UK class 70/71 for overhead+3rd rail, UK class 73/74 for 3rd rail+diesel, US FL9 3rd rail+diesel, US P32A-DM 3rd rail+diesel, Russian OPE1/2 overhead+diesel), but nothing that uses all 3 systems. I doubt any of them are really what you'd call high-speed either.

I doubt anyone ever really saw a point to a 3-mode system, after all, if you have a diesel engine and a pantograph, or a shoe, why bother with the 3rd option? Whatever method is least common you could always run off diesel power when you're lines with that... If the journey time spent requiring differing power sources is significant, it probably justifies switching the locomotive out for another.

Of course, since trainz doesn't actively require overhead catenary for an electric train, you could just use any electric locomotive and pretend it's running on diesel - you could probably even script an existing locomotive to change the engine sound to a diesel sound when the pantograph is lowered, it's probably a very minor change to make (if the enginesound can be changed by script, EDIT: it can't, so forget that idea :( ).

Sorry i may not have been clear enough, i was actually just looking for a pantograph electric locomotive with the mentioned speeds and freight capacities :D

Hi BT,

The ideal one for your purpose? No doubt but it's payware. A wonderful piece of payware but not very expensive... ;)

Where?

Dave 'Eldavo' Renshaw has an entry here...

Superb Class 92 with Chameleon texture switching, 3-mode Custom pantograph system including 3rd rail (Pandora) and CoupleStar coupling.

Here seen reskinned for my FZ (Zatoburgo railways)... :hehe:

Assuming UK location, any of the class 86, 87, 89, 90 or even 91 should do, all are geared for 100mph+ and are used, or were intended to be used, for freight in addition to passenger work.

The 92 is a great heavy-freight loco, but it's geared for low-speed. The 91 was intended to be used for high-speed freight in addition to its use for passenger work, but BR ended up scrapping that intention (the 91's mixed passenger/freight role being the justification for the killing of the class 89 project as well)

Why not reskin a AEM-7? They're modern passenger electrics, but could easily be used for freight after all it's your railroad. The AEM-7 is Amtrak's version of a similar one made in Sweden. The AEM-7 is one of the built-in assets.

Now this doesn't have the sleek Pendolino or Acela look, instead it's very freight like and capable of 125 mph. Of cource you need properly fitted stock behind it though! We don't want freight wagons thrown all over the countryside!
