Screenshot overlay

I thought since I'm getting back into Trainz, that I would upgrade one of my older routes. So I resurrected California dreaming from my archives and tried loading it. HAHAHAHAHAHA Di I really think it could happen?

After a few hours of messing with it and missing assets, I got the baseboard and track to open in TRS12. My thought was to take screenshots of the map view, and overlay them somehow on a baseboard. Gadd, this sounds like way too much work, even as I'm writing this. LOL

Can this even be done? Is there an easier way? Maybe California Dreamin's dead forever... rip

Open the route in a more recent game as you made it in, but not as recent as TS12. Change something, save it.
Now try in TS12.

I just tried a quick route I had in 12, and the shipping port failed to show up. Is TANE that stripped down?

Hi Gary,

If this asset is built-in in TS12, then it won't be ready just yet in T:ANE. That on the upcoming agenda to finish porting over the TS12 built-ins to T:ANE. When this is finished, we don't know but we felt it was better they finish up the service pack first. :)

That said... You can import the asset from TS12 as long as it's only built-in and not part of the payware packages. You will need to open the asset for editing and drag the folder over into T:ANE running at the same time, or easier export it to a CDP and import the CDP.

Once the asset is installed, you will need to fix textures because Trainz never imported the compiled textures - .texture files - directly. To fix these, you will need to use PEV's Images2TGA on the .texture files.

Once the asset is imported and fixed, it should show up in T:ANE and be ready to use.

Using the process above, I was able to import most of the built-ins I used from TS12 to T:ANE as part of a much larger data export and import.

...and not part of the payware packages.

Does this mean Payware is SOL or could there be a secondary way to keep it. Got too much Jointed rail stuff to have to rebuy it all. (FYI, I'm waiting to aquire TANE: CE until after the pubic SP1 and some priority expenses.)

Forget "CE". CE was just a short thing pre release of the actual TANE. Talk about TANE or TANE with SP1.
SP1 should be right around the corner with another "almost done" beta release just released.

Assuming you downloaded all the content you bought from JR and/or still have your account there, you will not have to buy that stuff again.
You can use and modify all in-game payware routes, but it will just require an extra step or two to get to the material (usually cloning / copying it, before trying to edit it).

Happy New Year to all!

John, it's most of the industries. The port and shipping, logging. There's a mess of things missing.
Can I just go d/l the entire DS? I really don't want to get into fixing someone else's built in content. Maybe I purchased TANE too early?

when I saw tane, it got horrible reviews so I bought it off Steam because I could return it if it didn't run.
It runs fine. I don't know what they are talking about. I did return it, then bought the Deluxe. :)

Maybe ppl don't like it because it's not polished? Or a RPG or FPS? Nothing to kill? (They hated Flight Simulator too)
I remember Trainz 1.x where it crashed all the time and you had to save every time you added a turnout/switch.

I'm half thinking about going back to 12 but I really like how tane runs. It's not choppy or laggy.

Hi Gary,

You didn't get it too soon. :)

Tony said that they will be finishing up the upgrades and upload of the built-ins very soon(tm) and uploading the content to the DLS for us to transfer over. This stuff will then be T:ANE ready so there will be no need to fix it. It so happened that I wanted the content sooner, that I was using in my routes, so I exported stuff from TS12 and had to repair it.

I just did a check of my T:ANE content in CM with seaport as my filter. I have 7 seaport-assets installed including the 4m standard seaport, which shows as built-in. kuid -25:209.

<kuid2:171456:10145:1> Seaport Custom
<kuid:-25:209> 4m standard seaport
<kuid:-25:789> Seaport Preview
<kuid:-25:100> Seaport
<kuid:-25:101> Seaport Basic
<kuid:117140:10059> Seaport
<kuid:175455:101305> JR Small Port Dock

I did a check on the other industries you mentioned and there are those built-in as well.

I wonder if these were included with the Deluxe version and not the standard and you should put that version in instead.

I agree that people don't have the patience with this kind of program, which may have been a good part of the problem. This is definitely not a run around and shoot type of program, and it's far different than many other games and programs out there. The unpolished nature of T:ANE when it first came out, I'm sure did turn a lot of people off. I too remember Trainz 1.0, though I didn't use it back then. Yup the crashes if you looked at it wrong at a particular time, and this sounds very familiar to T:ANE up to the service pack. With the SP, it has proven to be extremely stable. I run the simulator all day now with even the beta version.

I recently went back into TS12 to verify something and I too was taken back by not only the performance difference with the same route in the same location, but also the beauty we have with the shadows and lighting playing off of the various assets in the routes. As time goes on, this will only get better.

Forget "CE".

Deluxe should be perfectly fine?

Talk about TANE or TANE with SP1.

Planning on a non-beta version, I will observe the forums to see how the tide of opinion shifts with the SP1 post release. I do want TANE, but the seas are a bit too stormy today.

As long as it's nothing more than self adjustments or recalling these assets without repaying. I'm good with that.

Gary, since I don't see where your question

... <snippage> ... My thought was to take screenshots of the map view, and overlay them somehow on a baseboard. ... <more snippage> ... Can this even be done?... <still more snippage> ...

was directly answered, I'll have a go at it.

Yes, it can be done. I know, because I've done it, but it requires helper software and intermediate steps. The basic process is:

1) Take the screen shots of the map, and use appropriate software to post-process them to the appropriate size. My preferred "appropriate software" is GIMP, but most intermediate to advanced image processing software should work.

2) Use intermediate to advanced 3D modeling software to create plane objects to which the screen shots resulting from step 1 are applied as image textures. I know that Blender and 3D studio are probably suitably adanced modeling software; I'm less certain about GMAX.

3) Use the plane objects created in step 2 to create Trainz assets that will overlay a baseboard.

4) Apply the assets to a route.

The process is simple, but not necessarily easy if you don't have a working knowledge of image processing and modeling software.

Even easier than that... There are already some basemap objects which are 1000 x 1000 m in size. Simply clone the basmap object, scale the map image to the proper size, submit/commit the asset and it's now ready for use in Surveyor.

In Surveyor, place these on the baseboard where you want to lay track and put assets down, and lock it in a layer, otherwise, the asset will move while fiddling with other assets.

I tried this, and John's suggestion on the assets.
I brought most of it over and it's working. I had to make some tweaks to the bridges that seems to be not high enough but I'll put it up on the DS as soon as I can figure out all the stuff it takes to do it.

Next I'll add a bit more track and some real industries and upload version 2, lol
Way better way to get back into Trainz then starting fresh.
Maybe extent the route to Utah, or Nevada.

It's up on the DS called CalifDreamin07d, I uploaded it but I don't see it. Does it have to be seen by someone at Auran first?
It's the original layout with some fixes. I'll be expanding it.
