Screenshot of the Week: 2011 Special Edition

Good morning everyone.

Happy new year to all.

IMHO Photoshopping, sharpening etc. should be banned for 2011 entries. The Auran software together with the fantastic assets from the great creators (the finest bunch of creative talent that Auran never paid) is very capable without the need for any enhancements.

Cheers

Here’s my entry for this week:

Minimal Photoshopping is allowed. It always has been. Everyone has the right to do what they wish, to a certain extent. I have fuzzed up some of my shots to give them a softer layer which many shots seem to have on this forum. As far as I can tell, the most altering effect I'll allow is a sun flare. The shot shouldn't be altered much.

If I may add one additional thought...

When a raster image is resized, the resizing algorithm gets rid of pixels and extrapolates graphical data to fit the new resolution. Therefore, information is inevitably lost. Many photo editing programs, including Irfanview, have an option to automatically sharpen images after resizing, thereby "making up" for some of the loss of clarity. Sometimes it helps...sometimes not. Its in the eye of the beholder.

Cheers,
Fred

P.S. This loss of clarity does not occur when resizing vector graphics, since the algorithm operates on the mathematics of the vectors that define lines and curves, not on pixels.

Hi Pofig,

I see my good friend Linda is over there. I wondered where she had got off to.

I bet there are not allot of '59 Chevys over there. But then there are very few left over here, unfortunately.:(

So if someone edited their post, how do we tell if a picture was altered?

I've thought about this. It's mainly from memory on my part. If I remember a certain shot, it'll go. If I don't, I'll check the edit date and see. I know it's a major flaw but it's better than nothing.

If you are referring to my entry, Jim, I'll gladly disqualify myself if you think it makes a difference. I do seem to recall others changing their shots in the past if it was done shortly after their original post. I did not do it to gain advantage or to cheat.

Cheers,
Fred

Fred, I don't go through post by post to see if they've been edited. Someone else just brought that up rule before I asked the question. I thought about editing my own, since I forgot to ad a relay hut I had planned for that junction. I'm glad I didn't or I'd have to disqualify myself.

"Outrunning the storm"

A Mayburry Northern general freight races through Mayburry, PA as the sheets of rain fall right on its heels. On the high line a PRR freight roars over the flyover on its way to Harrisburg.
