Russian Characters

Greetings,

I am currently modelling a Russian layout and am wondering how to get the Russian alphabet to be recognised.

Currently, when I enter a Russian character, a square appears instead of the character. The same occurs with German symbols such as ß.

To get Trainz to recognise said characters, does a language pack have to be installed?

Johan

Trainz does not support such characters, unless you have the version for the language that it is in, as well as an equivalent version of Windows.

Even then, it does not like non-english characters.

Hi,

In my English language version of TS12 (running on Windows 7) I can enter any character that appears on my Swedish keyboard, like å, ä, ö. For German ß, I use Alt-0223 (on the numeric keypad). I can insert any Western European (or US :)) character this way (I believe - I haven't tested them all, but the ones I've tried appear nicely on signs).

Russian is another story, that doesn't seem to work even if I tell Windows to use a Russian keyboard layout. Works for entering text in Word and other text editors, but Trainz doesn't recognize them.

It depends on Windows installation not trainz (i have english version patched to buid 49922, all works fine). Also it is known that trainz uses UTF-8 format for in-game characters.

If you are using Gmax - it can use any font in your microsoft word program with its text function. Only disadvantage is they are very poly-count intensive. Some really fancy fonts can have as many as 1000 polys per letter.

If you can find the russian alphabet in a format MSword can use it might work.

Many thanks to you all.

So, sadly the characters cannot be used to name items :(

Ah well, I may put in a request in the suggestions box car for this feature as I think many people may like this feature :)

Early Trainz versions recognised international characters in asset names. That changed about TRS06 with the introduction of Content Manager when ASCII characters became standard in the English Language versions. If 'erafjel' has international character support it may be that English Language versions sold in Europe are tweaked, but certainly in my version all Russian assets named with Cyrillic characters show up as ???????? in CM and all menus - it's not a terribly satisfactory 'feature'! There was a fair outcry at the time the change was made, but the deed was done....

No, Cyrillic letters don't work, they show up as '?' or random characters. But all Western European letters, including all variations with umlauts and diacritical marks can be entered (with a little work using the Alt key). I have a download version from Auran/N3V, nothing specially European with it, so I think Western European character variations should work for "US English" versions as well.
