Running Trainz in a window?

ApproachMedium

Youtube dude
I am running Windows 7 64bit, with Trainz 2010 sp2. Is there a way to run the game in a window so I can have Excel opened without having to switch out of the game and back in? I tried going into display options and disabling "full screen." Doesn't change anything. I'm hoping to be able to run the game and write down industry names and commodities in excel at the same time. Any way to do this?

I do this all the time- I just set the game resolution lower than the monitor native resolution, and of course there is no check in the "fullscreen" box under video options. I'm also on Win 7 64bit- no special video hardware (an old radeon 3650, in fact)

There used to be an option to do this in the older versions of Trainz that was added to the trainzoption.txt file. I'm not sure if it's available anymore.

In TRS2006 I altered the Trainzoptions from "-fullscreen" instead to -windowed.

I looked up my max PC screen resolution, and set my DPI resolution to the next smaller size down. Now I can move Trainz game page around, all the while I am in surveyor and driver...and can simultainiously search the web, look at topo maps, and chat using Yahoo IM.

I would advise caution if you are using windowed mode - especially if you are using DirectX not OpenGL (it can cause lagging and graphics issues)

Normally a system with a fairly high-spec video card and processor is required to run it in windowed mode without lagging/graphics issues (or use OpenGL)

Well I'm running it in Directx mode with a dual monitor setup. Works great, although I do have a rather high end computer.

You probably already know this and don't like it -

I use <alt><tab> to jump out of the game to my Excel spreadsheet. It's the closes I can get as I too haven't found a way to window TS2010. Another <alt><tab> get you back in (if you don't have anything else open).

I just figured out that if you go to your Trainz program folder and look in the "bin" folder, you will find a file called "trainz.exe" (mine is at c:\Program Files (x86)\Auran\TS2010\bin).

Double click on it and Trainz will open in a window. This bypasses the usual menu screen that comes up when you click on the desktop icon.

I just tried it 3 times and it works. Probably a shortcut on your desk top to this file will get you where you want to be.

I would have edited my post above but I don't know how!!
