Run around train

Did a search... did not find it... what does this command do????

When it works, it's quite impressive. The locomotive uncouples from the train, drives to the other end of the train, and re-couples. Of course there has to be a suitable path for it to do this, and it can be very slow, or not work at all, if there are unsuitable signals in the path. The command simulates standard practice on UK steam-era passenger trains.

There is also a "Run Around Train Extended" command, but I have never found out what its extended capabilities are.

And it works only with the lead unit so if you're running multi-unit lashups it's not useful. And with steam power I've seen it take the loco around and leave the tender.

I've had it take the loco all the way out of the yard, down the main to a siding, then come back to couple on the end of the train.

Yes, I've asked on the forum what decides how far the loco goes before it backs up to the train, and no-one has had an answer. Sometimes it's just as far as is needed, other times it wanders off past several junctions!

Trainz should be a little bit more clever. A loco and its tender should be considered as one item when active, I think.

I do recall the discussion some time ago. I believe that a great deal depends upon the the "clearance" around junctions. The "AI" will look to clear itself of any junctions and if that means having to go "all the way out of the yard, down the main to a siding, then come back" then that is what it will do. Not sure what consensus was reached on the minimum distance needed for a "clearance".
 
I personally prefer "Run around train extended" <kuid2:117667:83:3> by nicroman which seems a bit more predictable and also if you have a multiple unit will switch the driver to the other end. I have a feeling the wandering off into the far beyond is somehow associated with the presence or lack of signals.
