Road intersections

When creating road intersections at angles other than the available intersection assets, is there any alternative to merely laying two roads across each other and ignoring the cars driving through eachother?
 
even with plop-able intersections the cars will drive thru them. If you don't want the cars to drive thru each other at any intersection It's best to use the ALTS system.

At unimportant locations, I use the Hold/Don't Hold-Shift KB key method when laying roads, and I have roads that converge at odd angles, but they do not join, and cars just disappear at the ends. lol !
 
*ATLS (Advanced Traffic Light System). There's a fair bit of setup involved but if you want fairly realistic intersections it is worth it. (http://www.boatztrainz.co.uk/page2.htm - There's also a decent number of different compatible assets for it on DLS - US style traffic lights, other styles of traffic stoppers, etc.)
 
I was actually planning on using ATLS for my grade crossings, so I suppose I've got more incentive to delve into it.

It is to my understanding that it can also be used for setting up street-running and trams/streetcars, correct?
 
that's actually what it was designed for, the crossing system part of it was an add-on later.

So I've gotten my first ATLS grade crossing set-up and working.

Are all subsequent crossings on "Channel 1" as well, or does each one need a specific channel?
