Reskinning with GIMP

I have just downloaded the latest version on GIMP onto my new computer and I am determined to teach myself how to use it and reskin/create content. Problem is, I'm STILL kind of an idiot when it comes to computers. I have a tutorial that someone posted through the forums about reskinning for beginners. It is a few years old I believe and does not address TS12. My problem is, I have cloned the asset in CM and am trying to open it in GIMP, but my computer wants to open it in a windows paint program. When I do a search and find the GIMP file, I'm not sure what to do next. When I click on "open" it just opens the program, the cloned asset is not there. I tried going into GIMP and opening the file, but I have no idea where to look.

Can anyone explain this to an idiot?

Thanks.

In Content Manager use Open for edit in Windows Explorer.
This will open up a folder with all the bits and pieces in it. You can then edit the individual .TGA files in there by browsing with the file open box in GIMP. You can also associate TGA files with GIMP if you need to in Windows Explorer.

When you're done doing what you want, you need to save the TGA files as uncompressed.

Ccowan, you have an admirable goal. I think, though, that you are biting off more than you need to in the way you're going about it. I love GIMP, and use it on a regular basis for a number of things. But trying to learn GIMP and reskinning at the same time is, in my opinion, setting sights a bit higher than might be comfortable. What I would recommend as an alternative course of action is to first learn to use GIMP, using the various tutorials available on using it available on Youtube, and other sources. Then when you are comfortable using the tool, start learning to use it to reskin. I think the results will be quicker, and less fraught with heart and headaches, than trying to learn both at once.
