I've dabbled in reskinning some when I used TRS 2004, but since getting TRS 2010, I'm at a loss on exactly what I need to succesfully reskin a locomotive. Anyone be able to help me figure out the programs I would need and how to reskin the locos in TRS 2010?

Not knowing exactly which locos you are trying to reskin I am working on conjecture, but here goes. Later versions of rollingstock, including locos, are likley to be using .texture files instead of .tga files. These files are compressed and cannot be opened in the normal way. To do any alterations to them you will have to use Pev's software, one program in particular is 'Pevsoft Images to Tga'. The other problem is finding the actual files to change, some do not have a visible colour map and work from various solid texture panels. I find these are impossible to reskin as one texture may be used on various different parts of the loco.

Best of luck,

I had actually planned on using bdaneals usra steam engines for initial reskins. It says in the license that he encourages others to reskin them. Any idea on those ones?

Hi,
Ben's locos are all early version models and have .tga files, so when you are editing them go to the body folder and look for a tga file named for the main body of the loco. If they have lod functions there will be one file with either main or 1 in it's name, do this one first, save it then resize it to the same size as the next one down, which may be medium or 2 and save it with that name. do the same for a third one if there is one. It will likley take some experimenting to find out which parts are which at first but once you get used to the mapping set up it will become easier. Also to get ben's locos running in TS10 you will likley have to replace the engine config file and the sound file.

Cheers,

Of course, you will need a graphics editing program like PSP or Photoshop, or a free one such as GIMP or Paint.net.
