Requesting Engine Specs?

Hello. I know locomotive requesting is usually looked down upon, but would it be possible to request an engine spec for an existing locomotive?

The Stirling Single that's been made.

OK that looks interesting. Currently I'm involved in updating some 1880 GWR Broad gauge locos to TC3 specs so it may get added on the end.

The following type of information would be helpful.

"Boiler length and diameter would be good (approximate from a drawing would do) and either the firebox heating surface area or the tube surface area."

"Firefly, Gorgon & Ixion: Barrel 8' 6" x 4' 0". 131 @ 2" tubes. Firebox
casing 4' 6" x 4' 8½". Tube heating surface 602 sq. ft. Firebox 97 sq. ft.
Total 699 sq. ft. Grate area 13.5 sq. ft. Boiler pressure 50 psi. (increased
later.)"

Thanks John

Whilst I think about it we probably need permission from Blue to do anything, which I have requested, however the new 1880 GWR broad gauge loco specs may not be far out.

Isn't there a site or two with British locomotive plans?

I have permission to reskin, so it's on the todo list. I can probably ask some questions on HMRS, I just wondered if you had the information to hand to save me some work.

Hi John

The Stirling Single boiler had a max dia of 4' 1/8th inch and a length of 11 feet 5 inches. It had a tube heating surface of 875.5 sq feet with the firebox having an area of 92.5 sq feet. The grate area was 15.8 sq feet.

The above are for No 1 but there was considerable variation between different locos with tube area ranging up to 1043 sq feet and the firebox area going up to 122 sq feet.

Hope this is helpful.

Brian

Thank you. Do you happen to know the information for the other Blue steam locos such as the Rocket? I think they will be in the same queue, at the moment they are behind Iron Clad and Hurricane but haven't been formally committed to.

Cheerio John

Hi again

I'm afraid I don't have any information on Rocket. I just happened to have a book on the Stirling Singles handy. My main interest is in the LNER locos and I have a number of books on the subject including the complete set of "Locos of the LNER" published by the RCTS so if you ever need info on any ex LNER locos just post on here. I believe Blue made the LNER J39 so if this is on your list let me know.

Hi John

I've just found some details (in "The British Steam Railway Locomotive 1825 - 1925" by E. L. Ahrons) for Rocket as it was built.

Cyl 8" x 17" - Boiler 6' long x 3' 4" dia - Firebox 2' long x 3' wide x 3' deep
Tube heating surface 117.75 sq feet - Firebox 20 sq feet.

If you let me know which other locos you need info on I'll see if there is anything about them in this book.

Regards

Brian

All of Blue's locos including LNER J39 are now on the list after Gorgon Broad Gauge Loco.

So as we need more information we'll post a request.

Also, are the engine specs your current project, or are you doing something else at the moment?

My current project is stalled waiting to try to recover a backup DVD from Winnipeg, the second project on the list I haven't started yet. Recently I cleaned up a couple of GWR Broad gauge items and dropped a note in their newsletter which was seen by one of the other content creators and he contacted me to do a clean up on some of his creations. However two people I'm working with on the first project happen to be one of the people who did worked on the steam engine specs for one of the UK payware people, and Chris in New Orleans who as been cleaning up his TS2010 items using Pev's tools.

So the team has taken it on, we are running a small assembly line at the moment doing clean up content and installing new engine specs whilst the DVD is found in Winnipeg.

Does that answer your question? Probably a week or two before its ready.

Flip me an email jwhelan0112 gmail.com if you want to beta it.

Thanks John

I could do with a bit of beta testing help. Step one was getting the loco and dependencies error free in TS2010.

Step two will be the new engine specs but there is an Easter rush on narrow boats at the moment so a slight delay.

Cheerio John

So you need beta testers for the new engines? Do you want me to email you?

The corrected for TS2010, TRS2004 version of the Stirling is now done, betaed and on the way to the DLS.

The version with the new engine specs will follow shortly.

Betas get sent out via email, if I don't have your email address you're out of the loop.
