I have been a long time Trainz owner who unfortunately gets interuppted from playing the game for several months. I had the initial Trainz and thought it was fantastic and then upgraded to Trainz 2006.

Now I wan to upgrade again but WE ALL know how unstable Trainz is when it first comes out so 2012 is absolutely out of the question for me and I have no need for the multi-player features in 2012.

I'm running a blazingly fast Azus PC with the Intel i7, Windows 7 64 bit, and a super fast NVIDEA graphics car.

What do you experts here recommend as the most stable version about 2006. Should I get 2009 or 2010 or something else?

Thanks in advance,
Nick

I have been told TS10, is better than 09 ... I am no expert though.

I am severly tempted by TS12 with its new routes and technonogy ... although compatability mode is not possible ... I have heard.

If your video card works superiorly in 06, make sure that it will handle 09,10,12 versions. If you have a weak PC and video card, you will need to upgrade PC parts.

Most low end laptops under $1200 will not play TS12 well at all, especially if they have integrated graphics video.

Usually a 1Gb Dedicated Graphics video card is needed on a laptop.

I am looking into a 17" Toshiba laptop that has 2Gb Dedicated Graphics video card.

Alot of new PC's are comming out later this year, and next year ... so Laptops will be better if you wait to buy them ... instead of right now.

I would recommend a desktop, instead of a laptop, for anything over TRS2006

Hi Nick,

The most important thing to remember about 2010 and 2012 is that these versions DO NOT include...."compatibility mode".

And it has been stated by "Windwalkr" of N3V that compatibility mode will not be part of any future Trainz versions.

So, if compatibility mode is important to you.... then 2009 may be the obvious choice.

Regards,

12 runs best (stability) of all the versions I own, but 2010 has not disappointed either. The choice is between the slightly better features in 12 and the legacy content included in 2010. Most of the legacy content is available for download anyway, so it may be a moot point. It might come down to price then, so figure on paying about twice as much for 12 as for 2010. Of course, you can get 2010 for about $25.00 USD, so it's not huge, by any means.

I've been using 2009 and 2010 for some time, but I've recently gravitated to 2009. I had problems with getting downloaded content to work in 2010 - a lot of it had missing or faulty dependencies, and I'm not into spending time fixing faults. Anyway, I found that most of the problems disappeared when I switched back to 2009.

Having said that, I'm interested in British steam and there isn't much of that in 2010. You may find that the content you want is readily available in 2010. Your compatriots will be better placed to comment on that. Apart from available content I don't think there's much difference between them. I use Win 7 (64 bit), NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTS, Intel Duo 266Ghz CPU and 8Gb RAM, which is probably a run-of-the-mill rig these days, and both versions are stable and run smoothly.

No doubt you will see quite a few posts here which will help you decide ... or confuse you utterly!! Good luck.

Alan

TS2010 ***DOES*** include compatibility mode, provided you do not apply the multiplayer patch. MP removes compatibility.

Agreed that TS12 is more stable. TS2010 has for more routes - about 30 - including some fairly unique ones that, I believe, are not available in TS12. If I didn't know about this or I didn't care about the routes, I'd probably pick TS12. Since I do, and since many of them are excellent, I'd pick TS2010.

I would say it was far better to buy the most up to date version of software now than to have to upgrade again in the near future. Trainz 12 is far better than 2010, which in turn was far better than it's predecessor and so on so on. Compatibility mode is rarely an issue now as most of the DLS content has been updated to match the high standards of 2010 and 12.
Go get yourself Trainz12 and you will never look back.

I don't want to sound like an old grump (which I am, actually), but having read the newsletters and ads about TS2012 I can't see any noticeable change except for the multiplayer aspect. It looks to me exactly like TS2009 or TS2010 if one is not interested in multiplayer.

What have I missed?

Thank you for your replys. I am now the proud owner of Trainz 2010. Bought it on my lunch hour. Now, I need to figure out if this purchase will give me some free download station time.

New sound engine (supports doppler) for one.

Off the top of my head.........

Graphics appear to be improved.
Better Frame rates.
Less Stutter to zero at low frame rates depending on hardware.
Better Draw distance.
Less popping up and disappearing of assets and terrain, obviously better on higher spec hardware.
More control over speed trees with a detail control that can control when lod cuts in for underpowered systems.
A few supposedly better looking speed Trees.
Satellite view direct from route or surveyor.
Doppler effect.
3d sound.
Addition of volume control
Addition of more developer information to aid trouble shooting.
Show kuids now an option from within the Simulator rather than having to add to TrainzOptions.txt
Automatic backup of items you have edited or downloaded with the ability to set how many days backups you wish to keep or not.
Driving controls moved to bottom right of screen.
TadDaemon shuts down far quicker than in 2010.
Here, OpenGL now works where as it was abysmal on 2010
No old content from previous versions, good for those who want a lightweight clean install.
The ability to actually add 2010 to TS12 by adding the JA files and registration key for those who cant live without the excess baggage.

IMO, even with the few bugs which should hopefully get fixed when that patch resurfaces, it is a big improvement to 2010.
