Real or a dream?

Picture this: it's 1958, and I'm trainspotting south of Motherwell on the ECML. A DMU goes past on what must be a test run, heading south. It isn't one of the suburban DMUs (Class 117). This one's racing along; it's six coaches long (or maybe 8), and meant to run at this length (no driver cabs in the middle) and, finally, it has 3 axle bogies on all coaches.

Can any one shed any light on this? I've wondered about it for many years.

Cheers

Sorry mate, the Blue Pullman didn't have 3-axle bogies. Must have been something else. It'd be nice to know about it's livery and markings and possibly specific design features that stood out. That could help

Can you remember the colour, or the shape of the ends. I can't think of any UK DMUs with 3 axle bogies so that may have been a false impression. Could it have been an export model on trial?

Thanks for your feedback

Thanks for your ideas. I think it must have been a dream - it was 50 years ago, and my recollections are definitely hazy.

I can't remember the colour; I think green. In fact, the only thing I'm sure of is the three axle bogies. But I had a fascination for these as a kid - the extra click on the track spoke of heavy expresses going to exotic places, I think. They were also very rare in my part of the world. So I think I dreamed it!

I visited some websites about UK DMUs after posting (but before you replied), and there's nothing that would come close; certainly no three axle bogies.

I hadn't thought of an export DMU. I had no idea we made DMUs for export; or perhaps this was a foreign DMU on trial for use in the UK? I'll check out the Pullman idea too - again I had no idea Pullman had a DMU.

I'm happy enough to accept it as a dream - I don't want to put you to any fruitless trouble. Thanks again for your input.

Cheers

Well if it were an export DMU, gotta have a look at countries that have standard gauge and an apparent need for -wheeled bogies under their DMU's. Now I have to say I can't really imagine that happening, however, the fascinating world of trains has sproued some very weird vehicles in the past too, so who knows. :hehe:

Probably Class 124

If it wasn't a dream then the most likely candidate would be a six-car Class 124 set.

2 axle bogies only, but the rest matches what I remember. There's a Trainz Class 124, so now I can drive it myself!
