Railway schematic software

I would like to create schematics of my railway routes, that is, like the London Underground maps. Is anyone aware of a piece of software that would be best for doing this?

I suppose it depends how large and complex your route is, but I did one for my route Dearnbyshire v2 by hand, which was a bit of fun and didn't take that long....(see discussion on the Dearnbyshire Release thread).
It was certainly influenced by the London Underground map. Probably not as tidy as a digital version, admittedly.....

I thought I had a memory of a piece of software someone was building, but a couple of searches has failed to come up with it, so I can't give a link. I don't recall that I ever saw that it was finished, so it may have ended up in limbo.
EDIT: To clarify, it was a thread on the forums here somewhere, but I have not been able to find it.

Thank you all. I'm going to look into ROS as suggested by Bill (HiBaller), but I'm inclined to agree that pen and ink is, in the end, the quickest way.

I have managed to get it working, although the website is rather clunky. The register button was greyed out but I clicked it anyway, it let me. The confirmation email got marked as Spam by my Gmail but I got it working in the end. It is very engaging, I was heavily using something called SimSig a few years ago but this one is better and has a dozens of maps other people have built and you can create your own, although I have yet to try that. This is mainly a signalling simulator so you are in the role of being in the signalbox and setting train paths and changing the points etc.

The maps here are too detailed for a public-facing network map that just shows the passenger stations etc.

Kind regards,

Gary

Thanks, Gary, I'll have to have another go.

Downloaded and used the ROS software. Nice but only showing stations and there is no way of inputting a trainz map onto it from what i could gather. Pen and paper is all we have at present. We did have a brilliant software program from vistamare some years ago but the creator left the trainz scene and moved onto other projects. Repeated requests to N3V to create such a tool have fallen on deaf ears.
