Railroad vs Trucking

I was just wondering if there are any stats out there on total volume for a year. I did a little a little research but didn't come up with squat.

This doesn't really answer your question, but a major issue with Trucks vs. Trains ordeal is that trucks can deliver freight to someones doorstep or a supermarket, whereas trains can usually only transport it to a depot or freight yard near the intended destination.

...too much...

 In ton-miles, trucks carry between 70%-80%...that justifies government tax-breaks for rail-freight corridor planning.

This seems to indicate that trucks carry more freight over all, which is understandable, because except for some bulk shipments train loads transfer to truck loads for local distribution. Bulk loads carried in trains, grain, etc... usually are made into items that are shipped by truck afterwards. Even some coal loads and energy products are transloaded.

Fix the link. There's 2 http://'s
