Railfanning Hunter Valley

mattm

Doing my best.
G'day people. Happy mothers day, to all the lovely mothers out there, who make life worth living:).

Now, on to business today. I have a couple of questions for NSW rail buffs, if i may. This coming Friday, i plan on getting out of my house for the day, as it's driving me mad, sitting here with nothing to do:eek:. To that end, i have decided to make a trip out of my normal area, up to the Hunter Valley, for a day of rail-fanning, and i would like a few questions answered before i set out.

No 1. Given the logistics of traveling to the Hunter from where i am, near Woy Woy, and the fact that it will take nearly 3 hours to travel there on the train, i am restricting myself to travel between Hamilton and Maitland.
Given that information, which station/s would be the best to spend the day at, given that i will arive at Hamilton at approx 11 AM, and spend 5-6 hours in the area? In other words which location would provide for the best photos/train watching areas?

No 2. In that time period (5-6 hours), on a good day, what frequency of traffic can i expect, and what variety of traffic can i expect to encounter?

In the hopes that somebody can provide me with the info i requested, and maybe a few tips for the day, i bid you a good evening.

Matt.
