Questions from 'Unregistered' users

Rather than open a new thread a quick moan about buying second hand Trainz. Bought 2009, now find that as the second owner I cannot download content because the first owner is the only registered user. It seems very unfair and restricts the capabilities of the game. So I am about to bin it. We cannot all afford to buy new and have a computer to run 2012 etc. I presume if Auran sold computers and you bought a second hand one they would tell you to sod off if you wanted to download updates or extra content.
Moan over, feel better for that.

Welcome to the forums.

It's standard policy for any company that uses serial number registration to limit what a second-hand copy can do. This is the same for Trainz, as it is not intended to be sold second-hand.

If you are able to find out who's copy it originally was, you may be able to use their username and password.

Anyway, TS2009 can be bought new very cheaply nowadays - quite often less than £10.

Hi All
Any account without a registered Trainz serial number has posting access to only a very small section of the forums. I think it may only permit them to post in the General Trainz forum, and maybe the Prototype Talk, and Community sections of the forums (not checked for a bit).

We will not be preventing people without serial numbers from posting in these forum sections, as there are many people who ask valid questions, which are best handled via the community (e.g. asking which version they should look at).

We also do not plan, at this stage, on censoring the DLS uploads. There are those who may be interested in some of these, and there is no requirement for you to download uploads that aren't of interest to you.

Regards

Thankyou for your response Zec.

As a thought, is it worth having a specific forum for unregistered users to post their queries related to which version they should buy etc? It may also help if the process for registering serial numbers is more prominent on the forum pages, as new users would not know to click the Planet Auran button at the top.

Shane

P.S. Can something also be done to help guide new users to post queries in the right place (i.e. these forums)? There's an increase on those using the Blogs feature for said purpose, which means that content-related blog posts are not appearing on the first page.

I am a member of several automobile Forums and the rule there is no registration, no posting. They are read only.

I think you are confusing registering for these Forums with the OP's Topic of registering your copy of the Trainz software. I was a registered member of these forums for several weeks, maybe a few months, before I purchase and registered my first copy of Trainz.

That said, these forums, I would guess, drive over 75% of all Trainz sales, and limiting the use of these forums based on "product registration" is, from a business standpoint, retarded. [Retard: definition; to make slow; delay the development or progress of (an action, process, etc.); hinder or impede.]

If not for the kindness of those who answered my early questions, I would not have purchased Trainz at all, as I had quite a lot of time and learning involved with MSTS. (9 years of content creation, which I am working on converting over to Trainz now that I have 3DCrafter and 3DS Max 2013)

Since you have no idea what their job responsibilities are, you wouldn't know if they are doing the job they are paid for or not.....which makes the comment irrelevant.

Since you have no idea what idea I have, that makes your comment "irrelevant". (can you see where this is going)

Thanks to all for your responses to this thread, a mixed bag of feelings & thoughts.
There have been 1 or 2 suggestions made, that could possibly improve things if taken onboard.

I sometimes find that when trying to put feelings or thought into words, it doesn't always come out as intended, or
can be misinterpreted so easily, all I can do is my best.

Currently Amazon UK are selling the Just Trains version of TRS2009 for £5.09 free delivery. This is the same version as mine so it patches okay. That's if you're interested in continuing with Trainz.
