Question on JR locos

bentrain14

does not make bogies
I have been noticing that on newer models(dash-9's especially) from JR you cant reskin them like you could older models. The bump is weird and its more difficult to skin them. Just wondering is there a way around this or why they are like this?

Its because they have three different skins (gecko skins). I think.

Are they payware? Seems to me that some creators are protecting their payware content by locking it, or making it difficult to reskin. If you buy official payware content, most of it will be locked, preventing editing/cloning/committing. They probably don't want reskins of their locomotives. I bought the Nickel Plate steam set that just came out and was disappointed that editing/committing is disabled, I can clone the items, but can't recommit them. I wanted to change the whistle/bell sound, but you can't recommit the loco, even though you are able to access the files and edit the config and save it.

They did that so you cant reskin them

No they didn't! Or, should I say how do YOU know that?

The gecko skins allow multiple versions of the locomotive or rolling stock with some rusty and some clean, graffiti on some, and some without. It's a really nifty little addition to totally awesome trains.

i put this someplace recently, i changed the way i did the spec maps/ because it looks better and i was just being lazy before. call me what you will, but i do not intend to help nor hinder those who wish to slap colors on my artwork and call it a 'reskin'.

To be frank I'm happy with the way your engines are initially, I've only changed the horns on them lol. And the guys at JR have provided us a F7 A&B reskin pack, so that's a good thing anyway.

so what? My stuff isnt a reskin? And btw, I thought it all looked good the way it was but your still doing fine.

I do not want to be rude or bully, but if someone claims to be a "real" repainter, so it's no problem to skin which locomotive whatsoever, it is just spending some time to make a blank/neutral skin first and then start to paint, I do it all the time, hehe ;).

I turn the bump into a gray paint before I start so you could say I start from scratch a little. Im getting to do locos that dont have one and Im starting off good. I hope to reskin some different content I can release to the whole community later on without the trouble of payware and crap like that.

no, its just that I have been skinning JR only locos and not much else and most of JR's locos cant be released when I skin them. but Im starting to expand because I want to be able to release my skins instead of just for personal use. so I Learned some texturing techniques like on the RAPT P42. I am a reskinner, im just not a very good skinner like Justin or ryan, or anyones whos been doing this a long time.
