Question is reskining camscott model illegal?

I downloaded an lner b1 1306 mayflower in lner Apple green from Darlington works but I wanted her to be 61306 in the br transitional livery.
so I reskin it but I then realised from someone commenting on my deviantart https://www.deviantart.com/orangeengine69 so I read the licence and I realized that I screwed up.
However it's a private reskin I'm not releasing it but I don't feel confident.
I Feel like I just break the law
 
I don't see a problem with private reskinning, if you're not releasing it then why should you be restricted with what you can do with it on your own machine?

But in short, I don't think it's illegal, no.

Private use? No problem! Reskin away! Not only do I reskin many things for private use, I kitbash and modify the hell out of the .IM mesh files. If someone gives you any problems about that, just realize the most they can do is just shake a fist at you with a grumpy face.

Modifying and reskinning existing content is honestly the best way to create new content as you get to learn how all the pieces behind trainz content works together and modifying existing meshes teaches you how to use 3D graphic software like Blender.

Think of this as modding. There's many games out there with thriving modding communities.

If content crators put artificial limits on how you can use their content within Trainz, it only hurts the community in general as it kills the desire of community members to learn the skills to create new content.

Don't worry, you can repaint whatever you want for your use and show your progress. I agree with Jd_james that reskin is the way to learn in Trainz.
On the other hand, among the creators there are people of all kinds so some will give permission to publish reskins about their creations and others will not, of course, you have to ask for permission.
In my case "I don't eat raw to anyone" (Spanish saying). 😁😄
 
First and foremost is to respect the original creator. So it's a simple question of politeness to ask them. Many times you can find in the licence tag in the config.txt hints what is allowed or not. In my case it says that you can do whatever you want (I always include the fbx for mesh editing) as long as you mention me inside your config.txt as the original author AND make sure that the new asset has to be on the DLS.

Asset wise Trainz is a community project so I have a great deal of problems with those diva type of creators who take themself as a kind of Caravaggio...

There is, though in this instance it's moot as the OP was asking about modifications for own use which doesn't require permission. So although Camscott has not posted in there you can still modify his content for your own use on your own PC.

It is a useful thread however if you are planning to release something to the public; always worth checking especially if assets don't have a specific licence. The authors may have posted a blanket licence in that thread.

Yes, by all means reskin to your heart's content for personal use. Some years ago there was a query whether you could post screenshots for personal reskins and there was a view you should seek permission. I don't think this was ever really bottomed-out though.

I want to reiterate that this is a private reskin I'm not releasing it.

what commonly happens when showing your private edits is that you show it to the original content creator then they migrate their forum to another one so you dont have access to the pm where you showed the content then they add your edit to the asset without telling anyone and then they rerelease your edit and claim they made it while accusing you of stealing their content

just a few things to be wary of if you ever show your privately edited content

Sadly I can't the email because I can't login to trainz portal

So few months ago I asked him via email and he is perfect fine with it as a private reskin
