Question about skins and exhaust

smash

Whos on First?
Hello all,
I was watching this video and had a thought. First the video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DzQ4DJ6sH68

Now the question I have has to do with trainz and exhaust and scripts.

In trainz we have locomotives that have scripts that will change the skin to be (either) new, slighty used or dirty.
Now my question: Is there any way to control the exhaust smoke to match the skin?

As an examlpe a new skin would have very little or no exhaust, but a heavily weathered loco might have alot of exhaust. Such as the above video.

Hope you can understand what I am asking.

Kenny

I would imagine that it could be done with some scripting. I myself am not a scripter, so perhaps somebody who does script could have a say about it.

I presume you are talking about deisels here. Well I don't know a lot about deisels but I often change the smoke on steam locos. There is no scripting required to change the appearance of the smoke in steam locos you just change the color, the speed, the mass and a few other things in the smoke container in the loc's config file. There may be scripting required to get it working in the first place but not to change the appearance. The only problem with Trainz is once you set up the smoke it will not change very much.

No he's saying:

Could it be made so that a nice clean skin, portraying a well maintained loco, have a mild color and amount of exhaust - while a heavily weathered/rust bucket skin, portraying a beat to death loco, belch tons of black as night smoke like the loco of the apocalypse?

I think.

There is a faulty assumption in the question of the original poster, in that a clean skin is not always associated with little, clean smoke, and a dirty one is not always associated with a large volume if black smoke. Locomotives manufactured by the US builder Alco, for example, tended to always be smoky, even when new, and in "factory fresh" paint, and railroads concerned with their appearance night be known to maintain the cosmetics of the locomotives at the expense of the mechanicals.

I would agree that a better thing would be a "slider" in the properties box:

Code:
EPA Friendly Oh god Oh god we're all gonna die

the latest JR locos, along with skin selection, have a smoke controller that varies between engines. it is not configurable at this time and is simply a random variation but something like that could be done.
