QR Rolling Stock

Here you go Ali. Townsville workshops 1930 with the Coalstage and what looks like Ross Creek on the left. This is the best shot of the coal stage I've seen so far.
Any good to you?
Frank

Thanks, I've saved those too. I'm guessing the North Yards are the ones on the west bank of Ross creek with the station, and the South Yards are the huge ones on the other (eastern) side?

Yes mate. The North Yard is the one at the Station and the South Yard is on the opposite side of the creek.
If I remember correctly there was a track that ended at stop blocks behind the Light Shops. We called that the Old Coal Stage Road. There were more roads when I was shunting and you came off the bridge in your Screenshot and went towards the Diesel Sheds, and the Old Coal Stage Rd branched off to the right from the Diesel Shed Road. The original Coal Stage must have been a fairly long road because they were still using steam until a few years before I started and the road over the other bridge to the Sth Yard must have passed under the Ramp going up to the Coal Stage.
I'll see if I can draw a mud map and scan and post it for you to show you where the Old Coal Stage Rd was. I'm getting a bit long in the tooth and never was mucch of a sketcher though.
Regards
Frank

Can't view that link as you have to sign in, which I can't do. Nor do I see a way to make an account so one can sign in. Back to work lol

Sorry Mate. I did a Google "where to get qr rail yard plans" and this is what I came up with.
Series: Station Yard Plans (Queensland Rail Heritage Collection) (archivessearch.qld.gov.au)
When I opened it, over in the right hand scroll down I saw
TOWNSVILLE NORTH YARD, 1962-01-01 - 1962-12-31
Clicked it and had when I clicked it and clicked 'Digital Copy' I got the 'Login or register' request. Which I did. Then I did a search 'Shunting Yards Townsville'.
I don't know if they charge but I had the option of requesting a quote for North, South and Jetty Shunt yards. Which I've done. Waiting to see now.
Sorry again mate. Brain trying to do too much at once.
Frank

If I click on "Request a digital copy" nothing happens, presumably because it knows I don't have an account. Shouldn't be that difficult, or it should provide a means of creating account, odd that it doesn't.
Edit, it does, so I've registered!

It's the Govt mate! They don't make nothing easy for us peasants. Yeah, it took me a while to crack the code too mate. But I'll give you a diploma anyway ;-D
It looks like they have plans there but as to how much I'm waitnig for a quote request. The 1940 North yard map could be what you are looking for mate. I pray so.
I know I'm getting square eyes with all the searching.
Frank
EDIT: This is what I've requested a quote for:

  • PR3499971 TOWNSVILLE NORTH YARD; Architectural or technical drawing

  • PR616458 Shunting yards, North Yard - Townsville; File/document

  • PR616476 Shunting yard, South Townsville (goods yard); File/document

  • PR616475 Shunting yard - Townsville Jetty; File/document
I think I saw one for Nth Yd, Sth Yd and Jetty shunt yard maps. It's 17 pages I think. But I'll wait and see what they say about the others first.

I've just ordered, well actually you have to ask for a quote before they decide if they can/should provide digital copies. Having no idea what names older sidings might have, I've requested the following:-
Rollinstone, Queens Rd., and Morris Siding (Townsville). (I think!)

I don't know what Queens Rd or Morris Siding are. Before my time well and trully. But is 'Rollinstone' supposed to be Rollingstone? If so then Rollingstone is north of Townsville. My uncle had a beach hut there.

Re BladeRunner501 map. I have had that for ages but didn't put it up because I don't think it reflects the 1940's. It shows the New Townsville Station on Ingham Rd and I think there may be a lot more tracks there than there were in 1940 Ali.
I'll see what I can find out about Queens Rd and Morris Siding but might be chasing a ghost mate.
EDIT: As far as I can figure out, Queens Rd Station was in Railway Estate according to the link below. I remember Oonoonba Station as a kid and also when I shunted up north but not Queens Rd Stn.

A bit of topic but very interesting. Ross Ck is beside the Nth Yd;

Not sure where you are looking mate. But the string is on the main line and the rear of the string is coming out of the station and the rake is heading to the bridge that crosses Ross Ck that takes you to the Sth Yd. The era may be 1950's - 60's looking at the motor cars. I can see the fence line that divides the Nth Yd from the roadway and footpath. The large round roof you see in the background is the Townsville Station and the building to the right is the shunters humpy with a couple of wagons beside it. The high building to the right is or was the engine sheds. Why the camp wagons are where they to the right of the pic?........... I wouldn't have a clue. Maybe they were the navvy gangs laying new track etc for the Diesel sheds etc.
I got that pic off a Facebook page called 'Lost Townsville' I don't know if this link will work or not, but there are some great pics there to scroll through. I'm not on Facebook nor do I intend to be. Good luck mate.

EDIT: A good pic of the Inlander with a Pommie pulling it. It shows how long the train used to be. Like when the clown pulled it out on me.

Hi Ali,
I definitely will NOT be buying plans of the Townsville Shuntyards! That kind of dough I don't have. I think I'll stick to memory.
Part copy of quote received below:
Kind regards
Frank

QUOTE: Thank you for your enquiry regarding QSA PR3499971 Map; Townsville North Yard
PR616458 File; Shunting yards, North Yard - approx. 100 pages
PR616476 File; Shunting yard, South Townsville – 1 plan and over 50 pages
PR616475 File; Shunting yard – Townsville Jetty – 4 plans and over 50 pages

The total amount due is $172.75 for an emailed copy.

Holly doly Batman! Yer, I'm not reach either, I got NSW plans free, but each was one page for each location, even Bathurst which is roughly the size of Townsville North yards. There are aerial photos which I downloaded off the net which clearly shows the north yards and the coal loader. QAP15014119 is the one in question, probably from QImagery.

Any chance you could give me the link mate.
I sent them a reply and said no thanks. They replied and said I was welcome to go there armed with a camera and take photos for free. But I have to book in. It's nearly a 2 hour drive each way and I'll be out of action until the New Year. See how I go then.
Kind regards
Frank
