PRR 1223 Revival?

It has been a while. Since PRR 1223 last run in 1989.

here is the history of the locomotive.

D16 class 4-4-0 1223 was homebuilt by the PRR juniata shops in Altoona. In later years the 1223 was displayed at railroad fairs in 1930,1940,and 1950,s. After retirement the 4-4-0 was stored with other PRR locomotives at the Northumberland roundhouse. in 1969 the Strasburg Railroad Leased the
4-4-0 and restored it to service. In the 1970's and 1980's the 1223 pulled the Strasburg tourist trains and occasional offline excursion trips. The 1223 stayed in operation at strasburg untill the early 1990's. When the lease on the 1223 had to renewed. But the Strasburg or Railroad museum did not renew the contract because of the 1223,s firebox and boiler jacket was not safe to meet FRA codes. the 1223 is now a static display. It may never steam under its own power again. (information from wikipedia)

I find some humor in how, despite the fact that you copied the information off Wikipedia, you still typed it in with your own improper grammar. For example, this mark (') is an apostrophe. It is located right next to the "Enter" key. What you have been using instead is a comma (,). They are not the same, yet you have used a comma in place of an apostrophe five times alone in your post, and countless times before. Please attempt to correct this or I will assume that you broke the "apostrophe" key.

As for the post itself....

For a thread titled "PRR 1223 Revival?", the post itself doesn't seem to acknowledge this idea. All the post tells us is the history of 1223, which as it's from Wikipedia (even the picture!), I could easily have found it myself. In fact, time after time, I've determined that Wikipedia is a much more reliable source than you. For example, the website clearly states that 1223 was leased from the Pennsylvania Railroad in the 1960s, which later transfered ownership to the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania in the 1970s. That would have provided some nice clarification in your post. Also, it would be nice if you could provide the year that 1223 was built for those unfamiliar with it, but I will go ahead myself: 1223 was built in 1905.

As for the intended post subject...

You pretty much answer it yourself, as the 1223 had too thin of a firebox (not sure where you got the boiler jacket- that wasn't on Wikipedia). To add more detail, Strasburg was willing to do the work but didn't want to on an engine that wasn't theirs (their 31 had the same issue and they repaired it in about a year), and the Museum didn't want them to rebuild 1223 (or the 7002) because it would ruin the historic fabric of the engines. So the engines ran once in 1990 with special FRA permission, and went back to the museum in the years after that.

As for the post TITLE......

There is very little likelihood that 1223 will run again. Many people seem to forget that when 1223 and 7002 were retired, the railroad looked for a new engine to augment the two train operation, and eventually found 475. So 475 replaced both PRR engines, and therefore 1223 has no need. The museum's stance on preserving historic fabric, and the major repairs 1223 would need to be compliant with modern FRA guidelines makes this more unlikely.

As I often state, the only way 1223 will run again is if someone pays Strasburg to build a new firebox. And boiler. And smokebox. And cab, and controls, and drive wheels, and leading truck, and pilot and tender and numberplate and whistle, etc.

I agree completely with the previous post, besides I said it once and this will be the last time I say this, the strasburg already has enough steam engines to work with and while it would be nice to see the 1223 run again,I just don't think it is worth it,that is just like the smaller PRR 2-8-0 that has the same situation mentioned above, small boiler, firebox and lets not forget the small drivers, anyway,it is just not going to happen!

DPFan1 are you serious about this? Do you REALLY care that much about these that you must post a new thread about them every single week?

Evan,
If he really was "serious" about these locomotives, he wouldn't be here asking his endless questions. He would be out reading books, searching the internet and finding the real people who worked with them. That is how he would go about it if he were serious, but he what me and some friends of mine in the railfanning community call...a "Foamer".
BTW joneau, the only reason he managed to mess that up is he is so in-experienced with the internet and computers itself that he doesn't know what "Copy & Paste" is!

Have fun everyone! Perhaps we should begin talking about Amtrak's fiscal situation or "Lamp Post Linda" again to make things interesting? God! What the hell is the point in this thread anyway?! To give us a little information about the engine? If we wanted the information we would go find it ourselves.

FAIL!

Just my Thoughts,
Woody

Hi Woody,

While the posts made by dpfan1 do have a tendency to be repetitive and perhaps annoying to many here (me too) but let's think about this.

1....I think he is a young person, pre-teen or early teen.

2....This thread was made at 10:45 EDT today.

3....Why was dpfan1 not in school?

4....Perhaps he is physically handicapped and unable to attend school.

5....We have no idea about his home life, could be different from our own.

6....Perhaps he does not have the social skills to interact with people.

I don't know his personal situation, but again, while it may annoy many, we need to communicate with him rather then put him down.

He may be a really good person just wanting attention from someone.

Sorry...but just my thoughts

Ron

We tried that... threads ago... And look what happened!

I see where you're coming from Ron, and I respect that. However, as Evan has stated, we have tried "communicating" and it gets everyone nowhere. This entire section of the forum is filling up with these useless threads. Also, a quick answer to your #2, today is Columbus Day and that is why he isn't in school. ;)

Cheers,
Woody

Well, my school is out for Columbus day, but Dpfan1 might have a different situation. As for the social skills, he DID register to this forums, and he has alo been able to register his TRS2006 (Which we don't even know if he PLAYS) but of course, his situation might be different. I personally would not give someone in their pre-teens free roam of the internet, but even if he is in his pre-teens, he should still know the difference between a comma "," and an apostrophe " ' ". Also Dpfan1, those red squiggly lines underneath of your words, those mean you misspelled them or used improper grammar, just right click and choose the word or symbol you meant to type.

Thanks,
Conrail45

Here is a photo of the 1223 running on the Strasburg railroad back in 1980's.

The little guy doesn't appear to be 'set-back' by negative comments !
And he got the apostrophe correct this time , maybe he is listening ?

Just my thoughts ,---DLR

I still say he's an alt. Thus the brash determination to "troll" everyone here by ignoring everybody's comments. Normally a regular "noob" doing this would eventually catch on and start making "I'm leaving" threads or ask questions of the veterans on how to use the forums.

He has not. Thus my train of thought... (no pun intended)

Yes, yes, it's a conspiracy theory, but I'm bored, hah!

I emailed the museum some time ago about 1223's condition. They said while indeed, the boiler's thickness isn't up to FRA's standards, the 1223, as well as 7002, could theoretically operate again. But the museum has no intentions of running it again because they don't want to subject it to any more wear.

Guys seriously, don't insult Foamers. There is nothing wrong with being a foamer to an extent. Now that you mention it, I guess there is a light, medium, and heavy dose of foameritis... and CRman, can I have a tinfoil hat?:hehe:

Acknowledging your problem is the first step towards recovery! Haha, just joking here. There are actually many theories concerning foamology, one being that many Foamers are just under-educated in the matter of railroads, others just can't put their camera down but never get any good shots then you've got the..."Rar rar! They just gave me a shave and a haircut!!!!!! WIN!!!!" types.
See, there is much to foamology than most think.
