Problem with downloading from DLS (TRS2004)

Hello all,

I am pretty much new to the world of Trainz and I pretty much been only set up for a week now. I am on TRS2004, and earlier in the week I HAVE logged on to DLS and downloaded some trains and a couple sessions. However, as of yesterday I am having problems with DLS.

I went to download some 4-4-0, 4-6-0, 2-6-0 locomotives and also a logging run scenario and a couple of strange things have been happening. This is what happens:

1) I can start up DLS and it looks like it is downloading normally.
2) When DLS is completely done downloading, I re-enter Trainz.
3) The scenarios and sessions I downloaded don't even show up in the lists
4) For the locomotives, some of them show up others don't. On one 2-6-2 locomotive I downloaded, the tender showed up, but the loco didn't. One (out of three) 4-4-0 locomotives I downloaded shows up in the list, but I can't view it in the Railyard, nor can I select it to place in the Surveyor. The same is true for three 4-6-0's I downloaded, only one shows up and I can't put it in the Surveyor. The only thing that downloaded without a problem and I CAN place it in the Surveyor is the 2-6-2's tender.

Can anyone tell me if this is an issue with my machine/Trainz installation, or if there is a problem with the site?

Thanx,

Geo

Between 1 & 2

Between 1 and 2 there should be a line - Installed assets. I assume you did install the downloaded assets into Trainz?
If so then it sounds like missing dependencies, especially with locos that can need quite a few before they will show in Trainz.

I suggest you get TrainzObjects from Tafweb's site and run that to find out if you need any extra assets.

Geo,
When downloading from the DLS, try using "Add to DLcart" rather than "Download file via direct FTP link" - That way it will also include all the sub-dependencies. (not to sure if you would be having all these problems if you where running 06)... :hehe: ;)
Cheers, Mac...

Hi,

just a thought or two...

You should have a default search for "2004" in the DLS search page.

If the items you want were prepared with a later version of Trainz (or one of their dependencies) it may not display correctly.

Second thought:-
IIRC (It's been a while since I used 2004) - you'll need Paintshed installed to display some of the re-skins.
The Paintshed install does need to be run (and something saved) to set up the entries before it will show the items.

I would say that it is not a problem with your Trainz program. It happens fairly frequently that locomotives arrive with parts missing. Also, make sure you haven't mistakenly downloaded any 2006 stuff into 2004. I have accidently done it a few times, and the item's name is in the Railyard but nothing shows.

Usually, routes always show up in Surveyor only until you put some trains on them. I have not downloaded many sessions, but sessions sometimes require a lot of downloading of rolling stock that the creator wants you to use in the session.... Also make sure you have the route that the session is for. I think the sessions show up under the Route's name in Surveyor.

You can right-click on items in Trainz Objectz and have it list "items used in object" and it will tell you what's missing, and you can look for the numbers yourself. I think you can have TO search for all of them on the Download Station.

Often, missing KUIDs are quite a waiting game. Months later they could show up. Another idea is to use the 2006 CMP to download the same stuff into 2006. In the 2006 CMP it will automatically download the dependencies and you can see what they are.

You could also (instead of "Download with Download Helper) you could click "Download Page", for the item. It will show you all the items used in it. And you could download them there by FTP (file transfer protocol) by hand, one by one, but then you have to go to the folder where you downloaded to, right click on the KUID and "Open" with 2004. Then you must click "Extract".

Doesn't it do that automatically?

Ok, will check it out. Thanx (Angela is my wife's name too!)

There can be a problem with Win 7 but since you have sucesfuly downloaded some, I don't think that is it.

No Win 7 or Vista...I stopped at XP.

I clicked on the first button on the top of the list which is the Download using the Download helper, not the second button, which is Download Page.

It is set for 2004 as the default search.

Hmmmm, good point, but one of the locos I downloaded, the LNER Claude Hamilton 4-4-0 doesn't have "reskin" checked off.

The weird one was the 2-6-2 V2 BR Green & Tender. The tender downloaded and I have it, but not the loco. These don't require Paintshed either.

No, I only have 2004 installed as of now and the search does clearly only have the TRS2004 button checked and UTC also (as I had that program on my machine first). The 2006 button IS NOT selected.

I have not downloaded many sessions, but sessions sometimes require a lot of downloading of rolling stock that the creator wants you to use in the session.... Also make sure you have the route that the session is for. I think the sessions show up under the Route's name in Surveyor.

Granted, that was with a couple of layouts I downloaded on the first day. However, any subsequent attempts to download a session or scenario has come up zilch.

Yeah, that part I don't know. I know that for the first day, I just clicked on Download Helper and it did it's job. All of a sudden now, nothing is working.

Often, missing KUIDs are quite a waiting game. Months later they could show up. Another idea is to use the 2006 CMP to download the same stuff into 2006. In the 2006 CMP it will automatically download the dependencies and you can see what they are.

MONTHS later? That is a tough call, but far fetched in my case as most of the items I want to download were from 2004. So that stuff should be up there.

:'( Robert

Oooo, that sounds messy. Could take hours just to get one item up.

Does anyone know if there is a problem with the DL Helper on DLS? It is kind of weird that it worked the first day I used it and now I can't get anything (DL wise) to work right.

Thanx,
Geo

I think you just answered your own question,my friend. There are a lot of threads about the DLS and none of them very flattering.Sometimes it works and sometime it doesn't.

Also a lot of the content has missing dependencies, some is made for Trainz.TRS2004,TRS2006 TRS 2009 and so it goes on.You need to have a good look at what you want to download, and finally take Angela's advice and visit Taffwebs site. Good Luck.
PS. Dont be in a hurry to buy a 1st class ticket for downloading as I personally believe at this time it would be a waste of money, but thats only my opinion!!;) Rusti

I just read up on Trainz Objects and supposedly it is on the buggy side, so I am not so sure if I want to download it. Do you need Trainz Objects for TRS2006?

Thanx,

No you don't. But you do need a working CMP. (Content Manager) which is built into TR2006.

Who said buggy and TO in the same breath? It was thanks to TO that TRS2004 was so good. As for CMP, although it started in TRS2006, IMHO it only became workable in TS2009 and now in TS2010.

Supposedly there were big problems at first with TRS2006 and CMP...most of the complaints in general were from prior to when The Complete Collection was made. So I am hopeful in that many of the early problems with TRS2006 have been rectified in this version.

It was mentioned by a couple people right here in these forums. One of the guys said TO wiped out his Trainz install. Perhaps it might have been an isolated case, perhaps not. At any rate, I am going to give TRS2006 a shot and see how well I fare with CMP.

FYI, for that 2-6-2 mentioned, here is the stuff that's needed to get both the loco and the tender to work:

Locomotive:
V2 Black Front Bogey2 <kuid:4468:50566>
V2 Black Rear Bogey2 <kuid:4468:50567>
V2 Hornsound <kuid:4468:54509>
2-6-2 V2 BR Green <kuid:4468:800>
2-6-2 V2 Enginespec <kuid:4468:51511>
V2 Black Bogey6 <kuid:4468:50568>

Tender:
2-6-2 V2 BR Green Tender <kuid:4468:801>
V2 Black Tender Bogey <kuid:4468:50569>

I don't use TS2004, but at a guess something probably got missed when you downloaded the locomotive but not when you downloaded the tender. (The locomotive does have a few more dependencies then the tender does.)

So since I can't drag and drop in TRS2004, what do I do with these? Up to now I only been using the Download helper. I guess I have to manually find these (where?) and then put them in some kind of folder, right?

You only have to type in the first part of the kuid 4468 then look for the second part among them. Or type in "jetstreamsky" (without the quote marks) in the user name.

Update: Loaded TRS2006 last night

You only have to type in the first part of the kuid 4468 then look for the second part among them. Or type in "jetstreamsky" (without the quote marks) in the user name.

Well last night I made the jump to TRS2006. I have not tried the download manager as of yet as I was trying to just move around and get a feel for the new setup.

I have made TRS2006 a separate install from TRS2004 so in the event that I don't like 2006, I have not touched my 2004 install. However, the downside to this is that the locos I have downloaded already need to be transferred over and I don't know how to do that.

Now my next question is this. In lieu of the difficulty in finding dependencies in 2004...is it possible for me to download the engines (2004 versions) within 2006 and then transfer that information over to 2004? If so then I can kill several birds with one stone.

Thanx,

Geo

I have been using TRS2006 for over a year and a half now with no problems. However, you should be aware that CMP needs Open GL (graphics) to function properly.

Good Luck, tomurban

The easiest way (for me) to transfer assets is to convert them to CDP's I do not know for sure if you can do that with TRS 2004. If you can convert an asset with TRS2004, then all you have to do is import the converted CDP into TRS 2006. TRS 2006 will automatically open and install the asset. Your next step would be to open and commit the item. If the asset was missing dependencies they will still be missing. Depending on what is missing, many times you can substitute a similar kuid from a similar asset that works. Engine sounds, horn sounds, bogies etc. are just a few of the items that can substituted. By the way, CDP stands for "Content Dispatcher Pack"

Well, I could switch over and initially my card did default to OpenGL upon installation. However, I was told that since I have an ATI card that I would be better off with DirectX. In terms of the visuals it does look better. However, since I have noticed a bit more of a framerate slowdown, I might try out OpenGL anyway perhaps there may be a slight performance shift.

I am still very fuzzy on the whole download thing, just because so much has been happening so fast. I bought "The Complete Collection" which was in 2008 a new release. It contains Trainz, UTC, TRS2004, TRS2006, and TRS2006 Routes 1-4. I bought the package in the summer time, but I had many projects brewing at that point in my life and it wasn't until now that I installed UTC first. I didn't stay with that long because UTC was buggy...so I went right to TRS2004. That program ran beautifully, but as what was pointed out here it seems like CDP was an easier way to download and given that the pros seem to outweigh the cons, I installed TRS2006 this past weekend.

I have not tried out CDP as of yet because now I am in route overload. In terms of routes TRS2006 has WAY more than TRS2004 (off the initial install). However, since I made TRS2006 a separate install, I would like to move my downloaded information from TRS2004 to 2006. Would you know how I can do that?

What I was hoping to do with CDP and TRS2006 is to also download TRS2004 info. Once it is loaded into TRS2006, I would need to know what I have to do to copy the info to TRS2004...this way I don't have to go crazy with the dependency thing I have in TRS2004. Is that doable?

Thanx,

Geo

Hi Geo,

As far as transferring CDP files between versions, I usually do it the "other way around" (from a 2004 "CDP" folder I made), into 2006.

The Download Helper on 2004 can do two things. One is to install the downloaded items into the Auran 2004 World folder.

Secondly, you also have a choice on the Trainz Helper screen, (if you just open it up), to have it automatically save the "raw" CDP files into an outside folder of your making. Those CDP's now can also be used as sort of a backup of all your items, But also, you can select and "import" them into other versions of Trainz, using the Content Manager of whatever version. So, you don't have to download more than once.

I don't actually know if it can be done by the Trainz 2006 program...into a specified CDP folder, and then into 2004. If someone tells us how to do it, then I will be learning a very useful fact also!

I like that idea about using the 2006 CMP to download, and being able to "see" all the missing (or "faulty") dependencies more clearly !!

See you later! Bob P.
