Problem Reinstalling Trainz 2009

Having posted on this board a couple of times and received multiple helpful replies, often within an hour of posting, has spoiled me! I posted this on the Trainz 2009 board yesterday and barely got any reads and no replies. I guess most people have moved on to 2012 :p

Since I would love to get back to playing with my trainz, I am going to commit the sin of cross-posting in the hopes that someone on this one can help me since it seems more active.

My computer was hit with a virus and I spent all last week reinstalling everything. I got around to re-downloading Trainz 2009 using the link on my "order history" page on the Auran website. I installed and then had a problem when I went to patch it up to current. I posted about that here and was advised that the download should have been current with no need to patch. I seem to have messed things up and had to uninstall and try again with a fresh installation. I re-downloaded after some problems with the Auran site (which eventually went down for maintenance). I successfully downloaded the three files yesterday and went to install.

I get as far as "User information" window. I enter the name I bought it under. I have no "organization" to enter, so I either leave it blank or enter "none." I copy and paste the serial number directly from the order history page (so no chance of mistyping the number). However, the "Next" button continues to be grayed out! I've tried various variations on the srial number (without dashes, for example) but it's always the same thing!

I saw on the Trainz 2009 forum some folks were reinstalling from both CD and digital downloads and the serial numbers not being recognized as valid, but they seem to get an error message to that effect when they click "next." I can't click it because it's grayed out!

I have a ticket in with Auran help, but I know it takes a while for people to get back on it, so I'm back on this forum in the hopes someone might have a suggestion or fix! It crossed my mind that there might be a maximum number of downloads for a given serial number, but I could find no warnings or notices to that effect. Plus, I would think I would get an error message instead of the button just being grayed out.

Many thanks for any information or suggestions!

Have you tried the suggestions given in the TS2009 forum? The current latest thread in that forum has a suggestion by me regarding serial number issues.

Shane

Hi Shane,

I copied and pasted the serial number directly from the Auran site. This worked in the previous two installations, so I don't believe it's a typo.

The window I get has three single boxes (I know what you mean about multiple boxes for serial numbers and this isn't that), one for name, one for organization and one for serial number. To be honest, I don't remember what it looked like the previous two times. I am assuming it's the same set up. The "organization" thing is throwing me, though.

One other difference - the second time I downloaded the files, I remember one download that took over six hours. This last time it was three files in three separate downloads - one installation file that downloaded quickly and the other two taking around 3 or 4 hours a piece.

Thanks for your suggestions. Maybe they'll fix the other folks' problems, but I don't think it applies here. Another difference from what those other people had is I don't get a specific error message like they seem to get. The "nest" just isn't clickable.

Should I re-download the installation file again? If it's a download limit issue, I don't want to make it worse!

Thank you!!

Gordon

Another possibillity - some installers require the Name, Organization, and Serial Number boxes to be filled in.

Also, check that your serial number format matches the format given on the other post.

Shane

Yeah, I considered that too. I tried entering "None" in on the "Organization" box, but no joy. I'll recheck the serial number format, but copying and pasting it from Auran's own site seems pretty safe from typos. I dunno. Frustrating!

same prob here with the gray (next) button

I'm running into that exact same problem. I've tried just about everything, serial number with hashes and without, with organization filled in and without, using my name in the user area and trying my auran user name. nothing seems to work. Hitting the keyboard did seem to help ether, just kidding, but the thought did cross me mind. any help will be helpful. thanks

I've had another (slightly odd) thought - I wonder if it is requiring an internet connection to check the serial? (or possibly, if there's extra spaces where they shouldn't be)

Shane

Shane: Good idea, but I'm hooked up to the internet when I do this, so there ought to be a connection. I have the same antivirus software setting as before when it worked, so I don't believe it's blocking access. Besides, I normally would get a warning that something is trying to access the internet and asking if I want to allow it. It's the same set-up as when I installed it last weekend and it worked. I only uninstalled because I messed up trying to patch it.

I believe it's something at Auran's end. That last time I downloaded the file, it was one single six-hour file download. Now it's broken into three smaller files, all of which need to be downloaded to install. In between, their download page was down for maintenance. I'm wondering if they didn't change it into smaller packets to make downloading easier but now there is a bug in the installation?

I have a ticket in with the help desk, so we'll see if they come back with anything.

Rodeo3st: I presume you're trying to install a digital download and not from a CD, right? If so, when you downloaded, was it one or three files? I'd suggest you also start a ticket with the their help desk - maybe if enough people do that it will alert them to what may very well be a glitch in some changes they made.

Yeah, something definitely has changed at their end. I found the download in my Firefox download manager. I clicked for it to take me to the download page, which it did. It was one installation file of 2.5G. I clicked to download it again and I got an error message "No such file or directory."

That issue has cropped up a few times - see what Helpdesk says on it.

I think the last time it happened, it was either WindWalkr or Zec who responded on the issue.

Shane

same same

Yup, Digital download and the 3 files, 2 Bin and 1 exe. I think your right, when they split the file up. also if I get a reply from my ticket I'll let yall know. probably an error in the exe file.

I think you may be right regarding the downloads - it should either be 1 .exe file only (TS2009) or 4/5 .bin files and 1 .exe file (TS2010 and later versions)

Jonzin' for Trainz....

lol, I hear ya man. I truly hope they get it fixed soon. could be a long weekend. lol

On the plus side, my productivity has suddenly gone through the roof!:o

@Shane: There was an installation file 416K and two "setup" bin files, around 1.5G each. There is also specific text that tell you to download all files first before trying to download. As an experiment, I tried downloading the installation file again but same problem. There has to be a bug in the installation file.

How long does it normally take for Help Desk to get back?

Its Saturday evening and there is still no bliss in my trainz community:confused:. Its amazing how many ideas I've been coming up with for a new layout and can't do squat about it. Like it has been said, (all revved up with no place to go).

I feel your pain!

Before the virus hit, I had been experimenting with airports and trains together. I have some ideas for a new layout too.

Do you - or anyone else - know how long it normally take HelpDesk to respond? I thought the site said within five days...is that weekdays? I posted on the 28th.

Stay strong! :)

I think it's 5 working days (this is usually Monday-Friday), although if the issue is complex, or requires changes at N3V's end, this can be a fair bit longer.

Shane

While waiting for a reply from the helpdesk, I found my copy of trs 2006.
needless to say, that was a very bad idea. 2006 and win 7 64bit do not mix. I just had to try at least. hope they get back with a solution soon.:(
