Private Message....

Dermmy

Too many projects...
[rant]

The board seems to be plagued by a rash of requests for 'Private Messages' recently.

Someone posts a query, somebody answers 'I can fix that - PM me.' - or - 'I have sent you a PM'.

This sort of thing is utter nonsense. The PURPOSE of the board is an exchange of information. The PURPOSE of the search engine is to enable folks to find previous answers without asking the same old question over and over.

If you have an answer, post it in open forum. If you are unsure of your answer and are afraid of negative feedback preface your post with "I am not sure but I think the answer might be...." If you don't have an answer, don't post.

Andy :(

...or just answer with whatever is on the top of yer' head, like I do! Sometimes you be right...sometimes not!:D

Andy, whatever they want to discuss may not be G-rated, or may not even be about Trainz at all, or maybe even both of those options. Hence the private message thing. Maybe we're on to something here... :hehe:

Nah, all joking aside, I think you do have a very good point and I fully agree that it's for everyone's best interest that things are explained in public on these here boards :Y:, NOT in private message :n:.

I agree with you completely Dermmy but of course there are always exceptions:

1) sometimes to keep a thread from further going off-topic one can PM a member about what they are discussing.
2) sometimes there are private thoughts or concerns that should be expressed privately.
3) some people don't know how to use the forums properly, or have disabled their PM box. I think this is the main reason why people state this.

Perhaps from now on, when we reply we can just reply to the person in the PM and wait a day or so for a reply. If they get no reply, you could then say check your PM box.

My 2 cents

Gisa ^^

Andy ,

Agree with you totally , have even posted that posting , " I can help you , PM me " , is totally taking away from the purpose of any Forum , and those few of us who actually use the search option .

And in addition , those who ask for help , receive a suggestion , and never return to post that what was suggested solved their problem !

Not understanding the importance of replying and/or not caring to take the time to make that last post , go figure ?

My thoughts --- ,DLR

Well, I agree with Andy... I have often read some of those "PM me and I'll tell you," and wondered---- what th' heck DID he (or she) tell???

I have to side with Andy here. The only thing I use PM for is for personal means, ie, thanks, email me a site, etc..

In the short time I have been here on these forums, I have learned a lot of things about Trainz in general. If everybody kept the resources between themselves and one other person, no one could get information without having to double post things.

Just my .02 cents.

But "everybody" doesn't keep the resources between themselves and one other person, so it isn't the issue this thread is trying to make it out to be....bottom line is, if someone wants to pm, it's their business and nobody elses....(except the person who gets the pm)...

Sourdough,
Agree , it is thier business and the receiver's , however , follow my scenarios :

Scenario 1 :
I post a thread requesting the location of kuid XXXXX:yyyyy .
A member replies ' Pm me and I will tell you .'
Scenario 2 :
I post a thread requesting the location of kuid XXXXX:yyyyy .
A member replies ' It can be found at the TPR Download Depot .'

IMHO , I believe Scenario 2 benefits the total community , rather than one member , to me the purpose of this Forum .

These are my thoughts , and I'm stickin' to 'em --- ,DLR

I am not for one moment suggesting there are not many excellent reasons to send a PM. My point (perhaps badly made) was exactly that made by Deelare 2 posts above.....

andy :)

I can help but read this thread and shake my head. To start a thread like this, somebody has to be awful cranky with nothing better to do. Who cares about PM's! We're here because we like Trainz.

In the meantime, I'm taking on perhaps one of the biggest projects in Trainz... Trying to recrute people for the Anthricite Project. Both this thread and my thread were started roughly at the same time...which thread got more posts? Dosen't make any sense!

yea i agree with you, post them out in the open, where others can
help

On the contrary, I think Andy posted an excellent threadstarter and deelare has answered it in everyone's best interest......I'm sure that the main reason for PM's is the passing of kuids between one another which should have been stamped out ages ago, it's against the Auran CoC and creators' licences, it is bad practice......I cannot understand why the moderators haven't stepped in by now....
Just tell us where missing assets are and we'll find them ourselves, we are not all thick, we can search for things.....

Cheerz. ex.

I have to agree with this; and I'm reasonably certain many PM to swap content, and that should not be endorsed by anyone.
