I sent a PM but Sent Items shows 0. Did the message actually get sent?

You might have turned off "Save a copy of this message in your Sent Items folder.".
The other possible explanation might be that your mailbox is full; it will then refuse to send a PM.

It was indeed my settings. I don't think I've ever really looked at them.
