Potential Railroad Rebirth in Liberia

Hi everyone:

I was listening to the BBC World Service this morning and I heard that an old iron ore hauling railroad in Liberia may return to service real soon. That puts a smile on my face, because the railroad has been severly damaged due to war in Africa, but with the line reopened, iron ore will be flowing again. That means iron ore will be used to make steel in Brazil again. This was simply amazing to hear on the radio.

Ah yes, all those happy people in Liberia will find great joy in this.

Oh btw.... do you know how much they get paid?

Per the BBC... it is>>>> GNI per capita: US $170 (World Bank, 2008)<<<< That is PER YEAR!:(

Still Operational, Sort Of

Actually, in one respect, the Liberian railroad has remained operational all these years. A very close friend is from Liberia (he was in exile here for 21 years while the war was on), and he has shown me pictures of these vehicles that are about the size of a track car that operate sort of "Fred Flintstone" style: You sit on it and make it go with your legs. I can't remember if people put their legs down through a hole or hung them off one end. I'll have to ask him if he still has one of those pictures.
