Possible to get this Trainz 2009 running ?

Hello friends,

I bought a Trainz 2009/2010 two-pack today (sort of realizing that they wouldn't run on my computer) but at least I would own these newer versions of Trainz for the future!

My system is an Abit NF8-V2 motherboard, 1 Gig memory, a Sempron 754 running at 2.2 Ghz (don't laugh, it runs Crysis very well) and a Radeon x800XT graphics card with 256mb memory. What I don't have is Windows XP SP3 (I have XP Pro SP1).

Anyhow, I tried to install Trainz 2009. The first thing I got was an error text from Valuesoft about an HTA file being opened with Notepad, and was instructed to go set the HTA files to be opened with microsoft HTML Application .. always! So, I did that. But I recall that the file was still opened by Notepad. (It looks like a little Visual Basic menu program, but it doesn't work).

So I went to the DVD folder and ran Setup in the WB (world builder?) folder. (there is also an EE setup folder) Went through the installation, put it into my E: drive. Now, basically, when I try to run 2009 it tells me that the "procedure entry point SetdllDirectoryA could not be located in the Dynamic link Library KERNEL32.DLL. (there is a KERNEL32.DLL, located in my C: partition).

I also noticed that there are some components of my Firefox browser located in the 2009 bin. folder... for whatever reason?

I have seen a Geforce 2 card mentioned somewhere as a minimum for this program, (I'm pretty sure), so my video is a few steps above that.

Any help would be appreciated! Thanks. Bob P.

It's not Firefox bits as such, it's the Mozilla components used by Trainz for the In game browser.

Well Malc, that is interesting to know as to why those Firefox bits are in there. I have been wondering why it is specified that Windows XP SP2 is needed. I looked up what was included in SP2, and it's mostly a firewall (I am already running a firewall, Zone Alarm) and security settings for Internet Explorer and Outlook Express, both of which I never use. .

lewisner, I looked it up on the Trainz 2009 website, and it states that the old Geforce2 (64mb) video card is the minimum. I am fairly sure that my computer can run 2009, perhaps with the usual slow-down problems with heavily populated areas.

I am wondering if I should also install the Engineer Edition from the DVD? And also wondering if 2009 has any habit of only installing correctly to the C: partition? It's that KERNEL32.DLL that is always mentioned as a problem!

Thanks much, Bob P.

Itareus, you are correct about it needing Windows XP SP3! I don't know where I got that SP2 info! Maybe it was wishful thinking. On the DVD box it also said nothing about a Geforce2 with 64mb memory. I just couldn't get my head around a Geforce2 64mb needing Windows XP SP3!

I do not wish to install Service Pack 3 on my computer. I know when I am happy and satisfied! It boots up fast, runs fast, plays games nicely, and has played just about every software I have put on it, including old Windows 98 games.

Well, at least I own Trainz 2009 and 2010 now, and I suppose my next computer will have Windows 7 and be able to run them! I can wait, I'm patient. Yet, I still have a last hope theory that if I could install TRS2009 on my C: partition (not enough space on it) , it could possibly work with that KERNEL32.DLL error.

I also thought I could be a rocket scientist at one time, but I eventually got over that!!

Thanks much, Bob P.

It worked ....

Hello friends,

I bought an old HP Pavilion desktop real cheap, which has a Pentium 4 3Ghz, 200 Gig drive, a Nvidia 5200 XT video, and 1 Gig memory. It has XP Home with Service pack 1a, whatever that is...

I installed Trainz 2009, ran that, then installed 2010, ran that. So they can be installed into service pack 1, and run on an old computer!

I thought that my primary game computer had Service pack 1, but found that it has no service packs at all. I'm still gonna keep it that way.

I'm going to experiment with the HP computer to try installing service packs 2 and later, three. Though I expect some trouble.

Patience is a virtue. Thanks much. Bob P.

Just from the security side I'd install SP3 there is no downside I can think of unless you're running 256 mb or less of main memory.

Cheerio John

You may have a problem here, depending on whether your version is 32-bit or 64-bit. If it's XP Pro 64-bit, SP3 is not available for that version.

Apart from that, the only reason I wouldn't advise installing SP3 is if you have one of a specific range Intel Celeron D processors.

Thanks Cascade, John and Shane!

Cascade, the video card is an Nvidia Geforce FX5200 XT with 128 mb (that's megabytes) of possibly 128-bit or possibly 64-bit memory. The computer is a a556x Pavilion. But I have an old Radeon 9600 Pro 256 mb video card in the closet that I might put into it.

It ran Trainz 2009 fairly well at 1024 x 768. When it "upgraded" me to 2010, things got to be a fairly bad slideshow! And with all those goofy trees, and all the things popping up in the distance , and finally white ballast on the tracks, I took a total disliking to it, and uninstalled.

Too bad, a lot of nice looking rolling stock and locos in 2010.

Well, now I have those Windows XP SP2 (KB835935) and SP3 (KB936929 x86) .exe's I downloaded from the library! (I'm on dial up at home) .

Shane, the OS on the Pavilion is a standard old XP Home SP1. That has to be 32-bit. I swear I read somewhere that if SP2 causes problems, it can be removed. But SP3 cannot be reversed... On my old time gaming PC is XP Pro 32-bit (in fact FAT32, because I like to use my old "Drive Image" program with it). I do not want to upgrade that computer.

Unfortunately, TS2009 and TS2010 will not run properly on XP SP1 (and even if you do successfully install it, you run the risk of BSODs during patching and operation of the game.

You should be able to remove SP3 though, although you may find FAT32 limiting when it comes to Trainz.
