PC Upgrade

Mick: You can alter the setup to point it to your drive if you want. As a default, most boards point to the CD drive first.

In answer to your questions regarding problems at start up, there should be none as long as you have your jumpers set correctly, which most come preset and you shouldn't have to change.

If you have any problems, shoot me a PM and I'll do what I can to help you

Thanks, everything went very well, just a couple of hiccups. TC3 runs a million times better, or so it seems.:D Thanks for all the advice. I've posted a question in the Surveyor section regarding transferring my route from the old to the new installation.

Yesterday I set up the Crossfire system, but it's hard to tell if there's any improvement. A crude test I did using Fraps benchmark showed an average improvement of about 2fps between Crossfire and non-Crossfire. It seems possible that I am able to can use higher performance settings in Trainz. But the strange thing is, that when I look at the status of the GPU cards in ATI's fancy Catalyst thingy, the main card is running at 95% (the one attached to the monitor) and the other is showing 1%. So am I really getting any Crossfire action?
Thanks,
Mick Berg.

I received all the bits today. Very quick free shipping from Newegg. I'd just like some assurance from one of you computer geek types. I have to use a IDE-SATA adapter on my HDD, as the new motherboards only have one IDE connector, and I need to keep my CDROM and DVD drives. Am I likely to encounter problems when I start the new rig up, in terms of the computer finding the HDD? I guess I will have to alter the BIOS to point it to the first SATA connector, right?
Thanks,
Mick Berg.

Newegg is great for this stuff...Just purchased a bunch of pieces for a new rig since my current one is over 5 or so years old now. Im in the same boat as some people in that the current PC has been upgraded to its limit...

Specs on the new one:

Intel i7 2.67Ghz Quad Core Processor
Western Digital Velociraptor 300GB 10000RPM HD
PC Power and Cooling 750W Power Supply
Gigabyte EX58-UD4P Motherboard ( this thing is niccceeeee!)
BFG GTX 285 1GB Video Card ( SLI Supported not going with two right now!)
GSKILL 6GB DDR3 SDRAM
All of this packed into a sweet Antec ATX mid-tower case...

I'm hoping this is leaps and bounds better gameplay for TRS 09 as I also demo the software for the Conrail Historical Society on the side ( since we sell it as a fundraiser for our society)

Id like to say congrats on your new purchase and enjoy.

Does the Fraps support the crossfire that your running, software - are all drivers up to date and are all motherboard components installed, ie are all the drivers installed. Does sound like there is a support driver not running. eg Controller driver etc.
the next bit is possible but unlikely in your case.
One of the biggist problems with ati (everything has a down side) is that ATi card Drivers are some of the most registry intensive pieces of software i have ever encountered this can be over come somewhat but the last time i saw a slow down issue the web forum i used was still operational and no longer is - so perhaps google some ATi support forums or manufacturer Blogs as some excellent fixes can be sourced there. good luck!

Yea it wasnt cheap but at least im set for a while, AND its upgradable for the future. I'm also getting some help on it and selling a few other small bits laying around to offset the cost...

Thanks, it is working well.

Crossfire does seem to be working, I get the annoying little logo at the top right of the screen. But the big issue is, I think, does Trainz support Crossfire? I should have established this first. Kyle says it doesn't but I think I'll find out officially from Auran.

"registry intensive software" :o Er, that's a bit out of my league....
